16-Year-Old Cavan Sullivan Stuns in Electrifying USMNT Debut Against Peru

16-year-old sensation Cavan Sullivan has been in remarkable form for club side Philadelphia Union, fueling speculation that he is the next defining figure and future cornerstone of the U.S. men's national team.

His outstanding performances across Major League Soccer—tallying six goals and eight assists across the last eight games—earned him his first senior call-up under USMNT head coach Mauricio Pochettino this fall, and when he stepped onto the field Saturday against Peru, it turned out to be a seamless transition.

Just two days before turning 17, Sullivan became the fourth-youngest player to make his debut for the Stars and Stripes in modern history and the youngest in more than two decades, dating back to when teenage sensation Freddy Adu (16 years, 234 days) first appeared in January 2006 against Canada.

He created two dangerous situations within the opening 10 minutes alone, getting a shot away that was eventually blocked. Shortly after, he was shown a yellow card for pursuing another opportunity near the goal line that resulted in a collision with Peru's goalkeeper Pedro Gallese. He went into halftime with the joint-most touches (five) inside Peru's six-yard box.

Sullivan consistently delivered threatening passes into the final third throughout the match and linked up particularly well with emerging USMNT star and right back Alex Freeman, 22, along the right flank. Sullivan caused real problems for Peruvian fullback Marcos López, showing no hesitation in isolating the player—a decade his senior—in one-on-one situations.

Sullivan's movement off the ball was equally impressive, complementing the dynamic energy displayed across the entire squad that pushed Peru's low block even further onto the back foot.

The teenager's composure was perhaps the most thrilling aspect for American supporters. Despite performing on one of the grandest stages of his young career, he showed no reluctance to attempt a slick move or a daring pass, retaining the charisma that has defined him since his record-breaking MLS debut in 2024 at just 14 years old. He plays not only with creativity, but also with a relentless drive to win at all costs.

Freeman will no doubt appreciate that Sullivan also consistently tracked back defensively, an exciting bonus of having such a young, high-energy player ahead of him on the wing.

The one notable weakness Sullivan encountered in his debut was in ground duels, losing all three he was involved in. Sullivan will need to adapt to the greater size, strength and physicality present at the international level, particularly against Conmebol opposition.

When Do Sullivan, USMNT Play Next?

Sullivan and the USMNT return to action on Tuesday in St. Louis for another friendly against a South American side. The Stars and Stripes will face a lively and tenacious Chile squad, a team they have not defeated since 2000 and one that has claimed victory in five of their last seven matches.

The teenager is no stranger to scoring, however, and will be hungry to get on the scoresheet and further cement his legacy in red, white and blue.
