2026–27 Champions League Draw: Which Clubs Got Lucky and Which Face a Battle From Day One?

The Champions League draw was held at the Grimaldi Forum in Monaco on Thursday, with French icon Thierry Henry and Spanish great David Villa revealing the destinies of all 36 clubs competing across Europe.

Every club, all competing within one unified standings table, discovered the eight opponents they will face during the opening stage of the prestigious tournament between September and January—playing four matches at home and four on the road.

Certain regulations govern which teams can and cannot be paired together in the league phase. Clubs are prohibited from facing opponents from the same nation, and they must be drawn against two teams from each seeding pot (1–4), groupings determined by UEFA coefficient—a ranking system built on results over the past five years. Inevitably, however, not all draws turned out to be equal.

Some sides will face a considerably harder path than others to secure a top-24 position in the standings and advance to the next round. The top eight of those 24 earn a direct pass to the round of 16, while the remaining 16 teams must fight for the leftover spots in a two-legged playoff round.

The Opta supercomputer has been hard at work, calculating which teams received the most favorable and most punishing draws based on their opponents' power rankings. Last season, Bayern Munich (92.9 average opponent rating) and Paris Saint-Germain (92.7) entered with the two statistically toughest draws. Both sides defied expectations, with PSG claiming their second consecutive title, while Bayern reached the semifinals before being knocked out by the French giants.

Both clubs will be chasing European glory come May, but this time they must deal with the likes of reigning Premier League champions Arsenal and back-to-back Spanish champions Barcelona right from the opening stage.

Easiest 2026–27 Champions League Draws

Andoni Iraola will be walking tall this morning, as the new Liverpool manager was handed a very generous league phase schedule (90.0 opponent average rating), the most favorable of any competing Premier League side. According to Opta's power rankings, Atlético Madrid and Inter Milan were the two least daunting opponents from the heavyweights of Pot 1, and Liverpool landed both of them.

José Mourinho will also be feeling rather satisfied, as Real Madrid received a favorable draw (90.0 opponent average rating). Sure, Los Blancos must face Arsenal straight away at the Emirates, but the 15-time champions should feel confident against their remaining opponents. Inter Milan presents a potentially tricky encounter, though Mourinho will be hosting his former club at the Bernabéu.

Hardest 2026–27 Champions League Draws

Enzo Maresca faces a serious challenge. Stepping into the enormous shadow of Pep Guardiola at Manchester City, the Italian manager also faces the toughest Champions League draw of any Premier League club. Erling Haaland and his teammates must tackle two European powerhouses immediately, visiting Barcelona at Camp Nou before hosting title-holders PSG at the Etihad. Pot 2's Sporting CP will also be no easy task, having reached the quarterfinals last season and pushed Arsenal all the way.

It will equally be a demanding campaign for Unai Emery's Aston Villa. They were drawn against both Barcelona and PSG from Pot 1, though they will be hoping to topple the defending champions at Villa Park as they managed in 2024–25. The Villans also face Borussia Dortmund and Club Brugge, the two statistically toughest teams available from Pot 2.
