Alex Freeman Seizes Golden Opportunity to Shine for USMNT This Weekend
The current transfer period has proven pivotal for United States men's national team players, with head coach Mauricio Pochettino taking an active role—engaging directly with players despite typically maintaining limited communication outside of international camps.
The week proved particularly significant for 21-year-old defender Alex Freeman. He completed his transfer from Orlando City to Spanish club Villarreal for a reported fee near $7 million, after discussing with Pochettino how departing MLS might affect his USMNT prospects and World Cup ambitions.
"I have no concerns," Pochettino stated regarding the move, with both sides agreeing the risk was worthwhile. "I'm not troubled by players making transfers during this window because I always expect the best outcome, and it's crucial for me that players feel content and at ease.
"When this occurs, it's because they seek advancement and development, and I believe it's a fantastic opportunity we must support and assist while adapting optimally."
A defender and wing-back who has burst onto the scene during the 2025 Concacaf Gold Cup and recent international matches, Freeman has been a dynamic force in MLS, capturing 2025 MLS Young Player of the Year recognition following six goals and 42 key passes.
Through his Villarreal signing, he becomes their third ex-MLS player, alongside Canadians Tani Oluwasyi and Tajon Buchanan, who previously represented Minnesota United and New England Revolution respectively.
Freeman will need time to find his footing in Spain, though he might earn his initial European playing time as Villarreal seeks to narrow the distance to third-positioned Atlético Madrid when facing Osasuna.

Another player moving toward the primary USMNT roster is Atalanta midfielder Yunus Musah. For the first time in multiple weeks, the USMNT official X profile featured Musah in its weekly player highlights, returning him to public attention.
The 23-year-old featured for 52 minutes in a Champions League loss to Union Saint-Gilloise during the week, but has now appeared for at least 20 minutes in eight of his last 10 appearances, demonstrating considerably more participation than earlier in 2026.
Though he hasn't recorded a goal or assist in his more attacking position, facing high-performing Como will offer a genuine assessment of his current form.

Weston McKennie Thrives in Fresh Position
Weston McKennie Thrives in Fresh Position

Weston McKennie is delivering some of his finest football and was recently praised as an "ideal striker" by his coach last week.
The 27-year-old has reversed speculation about leaving Juventus, excelling under Luciano Spalletti across various positions, and concluded January with three goals in Serie A and Champions League competitions.
This weekend, Juventus could climb into the top four—sufficient for Champions League qualification next season—and McKennie may again feature in attack against Parma, who include U.S. Soccer Young Player of the Year Benjamin Cremaschi.
McKennie's display, and possible celebratory moments with Jonathan David and Kenan Yıldız, will be closely monitored by Pochettino this Sunday.
