Alex Freeman Steals the Spotlight as USMNT Stars Dominate Across Europe in Standout Week

It was a productive week for the stars of the U.S. men's national team, who compete across the globe at the club level.

A number of Americans got on the scoresheet in Europe this weekend—seven in total worldwide—while others contributed to clean sheets with standout defensive displays.

With only days left before USMNT head coach Mauricio Pochettino announces his roster for the November international window, every player in contention is eager to perform and prove their worth to the Argentine tactician.

Here are the USMNT players who made their mark in Europe this weekend.

Joe Scally Jolts Borussia Monchengladbach to Victory

After opening the Bundesliga campaign with six consecutive losses, Borussia Mönchengladbach finally got on the board on Friday with a 3–2 victory over VfB Stuttgart. Joe Scally was the standout performer, with the American wingback cleverly redirecting teammate Zento Uno's driven ball into the net for a first-half equalizer.

Gladbach then moved ahead after the break before extending their lead in the 66th minute, where Scally was once again central to the action. After cutting out an attempted clearance, the 23-year-old dribbled past Stuttgart goalkeeper Dennis Seimen before delivering a pinpoint cross for Wael Mohya to nod into an unguarded net.

Having guided Gladbach to their first away victory since Dec. 5, Scally will now look to steer the side past Karlsruhe and into the DFB Pokal third round. He will also be keeping an eye out for a call-up from Pochettino.

Alex Freeman Fires Villarreal to Finish Line

While Scally has already notched three goals this season, his primary rival for the USMNT's right back spot, Alex Freeman, scored his first goal since September 2025. Freeman has been a standout in La Liga this fall and has firmly cemented himself in Villarreal's starting eleven. Typically deployed at right back, he was asked to fill the less familiar left back role on Saturday.

In the Derbi de la Comunitat against rivals Valencia, Villarreal conceded early but drew level in the 69th minute through Freeman, who cut inside to connect with Sergi Cardona's cross, heading home his first goal in European competition.

Freeman kept his composure throughout a fiery contest that saw both sides reduced to ten men. The 22-year-old made six recoveries and won seven ground duels, putting in a well-rounded display that earned him MVP of the Match honors. The Yellow Submarine claimed a 2–1 win after Georges Mikautadze's extra-time strike.

Tyler Adams Demolishes European Giants

Bournemouth are starting to hit their stride after a turbulent beginning to the Marco Rose era, and Tyler Adams has been a key stabilizing force. Following his midfield dominance over fellow USMNT star Yunus Musah last week in the 3–0 Europa League triumph against Milan, Adams helped Bournemouth dismantle yet another European heavyweight by the same 3–0 margin.

Adams outworked Manchester United's midfield trio of Youri Tielemans, Carlos Baleba, and Andrey Santos in every sense—no player covered more distance than Adams (7.4 miles) at Old Trafford. He also registered 13 defensive contributions and nine line-breaking passes for Bournemouth, who have now strung together four consecutive wins, scoring 11 goals and keeping a clean sheet throughout that run.

Timothy Weah Proves Unstoppable

Another American turning heads lately is Timothy Weah. Following a disappointing World Cup and a rough start to the season—losing seven of his first eight matches and receiving a red card in a September clash against Paris Saint-Germain—it appeared that Weah's time at Olympique de Marseille could be coming to an end.

Instead, the club captain has bounced back impressively, elevating his performances in recent weeks and contributing two assists in a 5–2 win over Angers on Oct. 18. Against Le Havre on Sunday, Weah weaved past three defenders and slotted home the second goal in an eventual 4–3 victory. He'll be hoping his upturn in form earns him a return to Pochettino's good books.
