Alexander Isak's Latest Injury Blow Spells Fresh Trouble for Liverpool's Crisis

Sweden's head coach Graham Potter has acknowledged that Liverpool forward Alexander Isak is still not at full fitness levels after his comeback from injury.

The 2025–26 season has been plagued by fitness concerns for Isak, whose self-imposed departure from Newcastle United meant he missed pre-season preparations. Liverpool boss Arne Slot had to gradually integrate his £125 million ($164.4 million) acquisition before a groin problem sidelined Isak again in late October.

Although injured, Isak was named as an unused substitute in the 3–0 loss to Manchester City and has been called up to Potter's Sweden roster for the current international break, though the former West Ham United manager cautioned supporters that the 26-year-old will see restricted playing time.

"He's had a positive week, he's ready [for Saturday's match against Switzerland]," he stated at a press conference. "However, we must be cautious with him since he's been absent for an extended period.

"He's not prepared to feature in two full 90-minute matches. We'll have to assess the situation."

Potter: Isak Determined to Change His Story With Sweden

Isak's beginning at Liverpool has been disappointing, and his international duties haven't provided much respite. Sweden currently occupy last place in their World Cup qualifying group with only one point from four matches.

Sweden must defeat both Switzerland and Slovenia in their upcoming fixtures to maintain any hope of qualification, while also requiring second-place Kosovo to lose both their remaining games to progress.

When questioned about whether Isak had discussed his difficult Liverpool start—the Premier League title holders have also struggled recently, suffering five defeats—during the international break, Potter emphasized that the striker's attention is entirely on performing for his nation.

"He's similar to everyone else regarding the Swedish national squad," Potter clarified. "He's disappointed with our recent performances.

"That's obvious as I've mentioned. But what I've discovered here is a group of players genuinely wanting improvement, who are frustrated with their current results. They're simply eager to excel for their nation and there's genuine passion for that cause."
