All The Arsenal Legends Who Have Claimed The Prestigious Ballon d'Or Crown

As one of England's most storied clubs, Arsenal have consistently drawn some of soccer's greatest talents to north London.

Many of the Gunners' most celebrated players, however, arrived without much hype. Under Arsène Wenger especially, the club had a knack for signing relatively obscure talents from across Europe and transforming them into world-class performers. Even prior to the Frenchman's tenure, Arsenal had already developed a wealth of exceptional players.

But individual brilliance doesn't always translate into trophies. The Ballon d'Or remains the pinnacle of individual recognition in soccer, honoring those who have risen above their peers through outstanding performances at the highest level.

From iconic strikers to commanding midfielders, a number of Arsenal stars have left their mark on the global stage. But just how close have the Gunners come to producing a Ballon d'Or winner? And which players have come nearest to claiming that coveted prize?

Every Player Who Has Won the Ballon d'Or with Arsenal

Ballon d'Or trophy

No Arsenal player has ever won the Ballon d'Or while at the club. Despite fielding numerous top-tier stars since the award was first presented in 1956, genuine title contenders have been few and far between.

Their most serious bids came during the early 2000s under Wenger, when one Arsenal icon twice placed among the award's top three finishers.

Arsenal Players Who Have Finished in the Ballon d'Or Top Three

Thierry Henry celebrates.

Thierry Henry stands as the only Arsenal player to have finished in the Ballon d'Or's top three while at the club. The French forward placed second in 2003 and third in 2006, solidifying his reputation as one of the finest players never to have claimed the award.

Henry was arguably the Premier League's dominant force during the first half of the 2000s, playing a key role in Arsenal's two league title victories. His sensational form in 2003 — which encompassed the early stages of the club's legendary Invincibles campaign — placed him firmly in the running for the Ballon d'Or.

Despite Henry's remarkable individual contributions, Juventus midfielder Pavel Nedved ultimately took home the award. The outcome remains a point of debate among supporters who felt the Arsenal striker was more deserving of the honor that year.

Henry came close once more in 2006, during his second-to-last season with Arsenal. Though the Gunners ended the campaign without silverware, the Frenchman led them on a memorable run to the Champions League final, where they fell short against Barcelona.

That year also featured a strong showing at the 2006 FIFA World Cup, where Henry netted three goals as France marched to the final. However, a defeat to Italy denied him yet another major international honor.

In the end, Italian defender Fabio Cannavaro, who captained the World Cup-winning side, claimed the Ballon d'Or, with goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon finishing as runner-up. Henry was left to settle for third place, with the prestigious individual accolade once again just beyond his grasp.
