All the Painful Trophy Droughts Real Madrid Have Suffered This Century

Real Madrid's 2025–26 season hangs in the balance, with the club dangerously close to the rare outcome of finishing a campaign empty-handed.

Los Blancos currently occupy second place in La Liga, trailing Barcelona by seven points with eight matches remaining. Their Copa del Rey hopes were also dashed in January following a shock exit to Albacete in the round of 16.

The Champions League arguably represents the club's strongest remaining shot at silverware. However, they face an uphill battle, needing to overturn a 2–1 deficit when they travel to Munich for the quarterfinal second leg on Wednesday.

Following Tuesday's loss to Bayern Munich, manager Álvaro Arbeloa urged any doubters to "stay in Madrid," while club icon Iker Casillas took to social media to declare that "everything being said now is just nonsense," calling on supporters and pundits alike to refrain from passing judgment on the season too soon.

The stark reality is that Madrid could very well conclude the season without lifting a single trophy—something that hasn't happened in five years and has occurred only four times throughout this century. To put Madrid's dominance into perspective, since the year 2000, Los Blancos have claimed twice as many Champions League titles (eight) as they have suffered trophyless seasons (four).

Here's a look back at the only occasions Real Madrid have gone through an entire season without a major trophy* since the turn of the millennium.
