Alphonso Davies Injury Sends Shockwaves Through Canada's World Cup Dreams
Canadian national team defender Alphonso Davies was forced to leave the field during Bayern Munich's 3–2 victory against Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday, raising worries about his availability for the 2026 World Cup with only 111 days remaining.
The 25-year-old became involved in a standard challenge for possession early in the second period at Allianz Arena before collapsing to the ground in obvious pain. Following medical treatment, he eventually walked off the field in considerable emotional distress with teammates accompanying him.
Although offered a stretcher, Davies was able to make his way to the tunnel on his own. Bayern proceeded to claim victory, increasing their advantage at the summit of the Bundesliga standings to eight points ahead of runner-up Borussia Dortmund.
Davies had just recently resumed playing on Jan. 17. He was absent for the complete offseason and the opening portion of the 2025–26 season while recovering from an ACL injury and operation, suffered during March 2025's international break in a Concacaf Nations League fixture versus the United States.
Following his comeback, he has accumulated only 500 minutes over 12 matches.
"It appeared like it could be something more serious," stated Max Eberl, Bayern's sporting director, following Saturday's game. "It must be muscular in nature. He's currently undergoing examination."
Bayern coach Vincent Kompany also mentioned that the injury "doesn't appear too severe," and that he doesn't know "precisely what (Davies) is dealing with. He was somewhat calmer in the locker room. We're hoping there won't be excessive time away."
A Potential Blow to Canada's World Cup Hopes
A Potential Setback for Canada's World Cup Aspirations

Davies has struggled with injuries throughout his professional journey, with the recent ACL rupture being the most serious aside from myocarditis, a heart muscle inflammation, which sidelined him for months after a COVID-19 infection in 2022, affecting his Canada participation during 2022 World Cup qualification.
When healthy, he serves as the driving force behind coach Jesse Marsch's Canada team, whether operating in a conventional left-back position or pushing forward as a left midfielder in the squad's 4-4-2 formation.
Any muscular problem that affects his pace and mobility could undermine his effectiveness in Marsch's high-intensity pressing approach. Additionally, the possibility of losing him completely from the starting eleven would leave Canada without their most crucial match-winning asset against superior opponents.
Thankfully for Canada, should Davies's recent injury affect his World Cup participation, the wide positions, particularly on the left flank, offer depth. Toronto FC's Richie Laryea would probably step in at left-back, where he excelled throughout 2025, while Norwich City's Ali Ahmed, Hull City's Liam Millar, or LAFC's Jacob Shaffelburg could fill the left midfield role.
Canada will contest four exhibition matches before their June 12 World Cup opening game in Toronto, facing Tunisia and Iceland during the March international period, followed by encounters with Ireland and Uzbekistan in pre-tournament friendlies.
