Alvaro Arbeloa Stands Defiant After Crushing Real Madrid Managerial Debut Goes Horribly Wrong

Álvaro Arbeloa declared he would "select the identical squad once more" following Real Madrid's shocking Copa del Rey round of 16 elimination at the hands of Albacete on Wednesday.

Despite having merely one day to organize after replacing Xabi Alonso on Monday night, this match should have been straightforward for Arbeloa and his players. Albacete had never previously defeated Real Madrid and are currently positioned just one point clear of the relegation zone in La Liga 2.

Focusing on the squad's long-term fitness, Arbeloa chose to rest seven key players at home. Kylian Mbappé and Rodrygo, both recovering from injuries following the Spanish Super Cup final, were not included, while Jude Bellingham, Thibaut Courtois, Antonio Rüdiger, Álvaro Carreras and Aurélien Tchouaméni all remained behind for recovery.

Academy players from Arbeloa's previous Real Madrid Castilla team filled the vacant positions, with right-back David Jiménez and midfielder Jorge Cestero both in the starting lineup.

Arbeloa stated he was "certain" it was the correct squad selection but declined to criticize the players.

"At this institution a tie is disappointing, a disaster, so consider a loss like this," the coach, reportedly already secured with a contract through next season's conclusion, informed journalists afterward.

Real Madrid lineup against Albacete, Copa del Rey

"I bear responsibility, I make the choices: the lineup, our playing style, the changes. We'll attempt to restore our confidence and fitness, and enhance our performance for Saturday's match [against Levante]."

He continued: "I believed the squad selection was appropriate, and I maintain that view. We possess an exceptional roster, featuring talented players. It's challenging for them to execute everything I've requested after only one day [of preparation]. We have numerous players who need to return to peak physical condition.

"I have no regrets. I would choose the same lineup again."

Although Arbeloa accepted full accountability, the club's official media outlet, RealmadridTV, quickly cleared him of blame for the display and 3–2 loss.

"Today Real Madrid failed to show up in Albacete. We must acknowledge this reality, a very poor showing. Arbeloa bears no responsibility and this match must serve as a catalyst for change. Two trophies have been surrendered in three days," a broadcast segment stated.

"This situation must change immediately. We must improve significantly and rapidly, one tournament has been lost but Saturday brings La Liga, the Champions League returns and we must respond now. Real Madrid must emerge from this predicament."
