Ancelotti Reveals Why He Blocked Real Madrid Stars from Brazil's World Cup Squad

Carlo Ancelotti surprised observers when he revealed his second squad selection as Brazil's head coach on Monday, most notably excluding all Real Madrid players from the roster.

The omissions of recently injured Éder Militão and currently sidelined Endrick are understandable. However, the absence of attacking duo Vinícius Júnior and Rodrygo has generated significant discussion.

Both Brazilian stars featured in Real Madrid's 3–0 triumph against Real Oviedo during the weekend, meaning Ancelotti couldn't cite injuries as the reason for their exclusion from his 23-player roster. During Monday's press conference, the Italian coach explained his rationale for omitting the skilled duo.

"My approach is to connect with new players whom I don't know well personally at this time," Ancelotti explained. "I'm looking to understand other players who could contribute positively to the national team."

Ancelotti implemented nine modifications to the squad he chose for his inaugural stint as Brazil's coach in June. Vinícius's omission is also justified by a suspension he received in Brazil's previous match that will keep him out of the upcoming fixture.

Rodrygo's exclusion is potentially more significant given that he was also omitted from Ancelotti's initial Brazil call-up. Nevertheless, the Italian provided reasoning for his decision to again exclude Rodrygo from his selection.

"I clearly have great affection for him [Rodrygo]," the Italian emphasized. "He performed excellently for Real Madrid yesterday. It marked his first appearance in quite some time. Now he has the opportunity to prepare thoroughly for his national team comeback. Physical condition is a crucial factor. A national team representative must be at peak physical fitness."

Regarding players who missed selection due to fitness issues, Neymar Jr. was also excluded from Brazil's roster. La Seleçao's record goalscorer hasn't represented his nation since suffering an ACL injury during a 2023 World Cup qualifying fixture. While his highly anticipated return remains pending, Ancelotti is familiar with Neymar's capabilities.

"Neymar is excluded because he experienced a minor issue recently. Additionally, we don't need to evaluate him. Everyone understands Neymar's quality, the entire national team, all Brazilian supporters are well aware of Neymar's abilities. Neymar, like everyone else, must achieve optimal physical condition to assist the national team."

When questioned about whether he had spoken with Rodrygo or Neymar about their squad omissions, Ancelotti confirmed he hadn't, mentioning that they could contact him if they desired clarification.

Brazil has already secured qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. La Seleçao will welcome Chile on Sept. 4 before traveling to Bolivia on Sept. 9 to conclude their Conmebol World Cup qualifying campaign.
