Anders Dreyer Captures MLS Newcomer of the Year After Shattering Records in Debut Season
San Diego FC standout Anders Dreyer earned the MLS Newcomer of the Year award on Tuesday after an exceptional inaugural expansion campaign.
The Danish attacker played a crucial role in San Diego's first MLS season as they established a new record for most regular-season points earned by an expansion franchise. Dreyer recorded 38 goal contributions in 34 matches (19 goals, 19 assists) while San Diego claimed the top spot in the Western Conference. His performance matched Sebastian Giovinco's record for most goal contributions during a player's first MLS campaign.
Dreyer edged out LAFC's summer acquisition Son Heung-min and Chicago Fire's impressive Philip Zinckernagel for the award. The Danish player is also a candidate for the Landon Donovan MLS MVP trophy alongside Denis Bouanga, Evander, Sam Surridge and Lionel Messi.
Dreyer: A Season You Could Only Dream of

Dreyer shared his thoughts with Sports Illustrated about his inaugural season on the west coast.
"For our entire squad, it's been something beyond your wildest dreams. I can still recall matches where we didn't secure the victory at home yet the fans continued supporting us. That's something money can't purchase, it's truly special," the Danish player expressed.
Dreyer also praised head coach Mikey Varas as a major factor in his decision to join the club in January.
"I recall that initial Zoom meeting with Mikey. From that moment, I was telling my representative that I genuinely wanted to join San Diego and play soccer. His vision of me as a player aligns perfectly with how I view myself.
"It's been thrilling. To help build an entirely new squad, to be among the first players representing San Diego. Every time I step onto the field with my teammates, I feel that excitement and readiness for whatever challenge lies ahead."
San Diego is currently navigating their inaugural playoff run. Following their postseason opener victory against the Portland Timbers, San Diego lost the second match in a penalty shootout, creating a decisive third game at Snapdragon Stadium on Nov. 9.
