Andoni Iraola Makes Bold Liverpool Transfer Pledge That Ignites Summer Excitement

Newly appointed Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola used his maiden press conference as Reds head coach to call on the club's hierarchy to continue strengthening his squad in the transfer window.

Winger Víctor Muñoz has made the move from Osasuna and has linked up with January acquisition Jérémy Jacquet, who stayed at Rennes through the end of the campaign before making his way to Anfield ahead of the new season.

"Obviously we've signed two players already but we need more players, we know this," Iraola told the gathered press. "The club is working on this.

"Me as a coach, selfishly I want the players here from day one ready to train for preseason but understand football doesn't work like this. I know the club is working hard for those signings and I'm trying to help also."

Which Players Could Liverpool Target?

Much of Liverpool's activity in the transfer market has been driven by injuries and player exits.

In the backline, left back Andy Robertson was followed out of the club by centre back Ibrahima Konaté. Jacquet's signing goes some way toward filling that gap, though further reinforcement may still be necessary.

Meanwhile, a serious injury to right back Conor Bradley means another addition could be needed in that area, with Rayo Vallecano's Andrei Rațiu long touted as a potential option. Likewise, striker Hugo Ekitiké is not expected to feature again this calendar year due to an Achilles tendon problem.

There could be considerable movement in midfield, especially if Curtis Jones, who has attracted interest from Inter Milan, leaves in the final year of his deal. Borussia Dortmund's Felix Nmecha, Wolverhampton Wanderers' João Gomes and Juventus' Khéphren Thuram have all been mentioned as targets.

The most glaring gap in the squad stems from the exit of talismanic winger Mohamed Salah. Muñoz will provide some cover in that area, but the club is reportedly prepared to invest heavily in a high-profile replacement, with Paris Saint-Germain's Bradley Barcola and Brighton & Hove Albion's Yankuba Minteh among the names on their radar.

Given the financial outlay required to secure a marquee attacker, Liverpool may be focusing their resources on that pursuit before addressing other areas of the squad.

Iraola Tempers Expectations in Summer of Change for Liverpool

Beyond the managerial transition, Iraola called for patience from the fanbase during what is shaping up to be a summer of significant upheaval both on the field and in the club's front office.

"I think we have to accept there are difficult situations right now in terms of both sides, a lot of senior players leaving, players who have achieved everything here and also some important players injured," he stressed. "Ekitiké, Bradley, [Giovanni] Leoni ... long injuries.

"So we have to replace important players making good numbers and those three injuries that will miss some time, we have to find a way to replace them. These three, they are long-term solutions but there will be in this case a period where are without them, so we need solutions."

The responsibility of finding those solutions falls to those at the top of the Anfield structure, though uncertainty surrounds even those roles.

Sporting director Richard Hughes is anticipated to leave for the Saudi Pro League following this summer, while senior figure Michael Edwards—widely credited with orchestrating the arrivals of Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Sadio Mané—is also set to move on.

With so much turbulence behind the scenes, Iraola faces the considerable challenge of ensuring that off-pitch instability does not seep into performances on the field.
