Andre Onana Loan Sealed: Here's How Man Utd Stand To Benefit From Blockbuster New Deal

Manchester United shot-stopper André Onana is set to extend his loan spell at Turkish side Trabzonspor for a second consecutive season throughout 2026–27, a move that signals strong confidence in Senne Lammens.

Lammens joined last September as a relatively unheralded signing after Onana was axed by Ruben Amorim, with the Belgian keeper going on to claim the Premier League Transfer of the Season award at the league's annual ceremony last month.

While there was never a genuine expectation that Onana would return to contest Lammens for the number one shirt, the matter has been resolved swiftly, right at the opening of the transfer window and ahead of what would have been an uncomfortable preseason return for the goalkeeper next week.

He featured 34 times for Trabzonspor last campaign, contributing to the club's Turkish Cup triumph — their first piece of silverware in four years. Trabzonspor also secured a third-place finish in the Süper Lig, a significant improvement on their disappointing seventh-place showing the previous season, which earned them Europa League qualification.

"Everyone at United wishes André the best of luck for the campaign ahead," read a brief statement released from Old Trafford on Friday.

Onana Loan Fee, Salary Agreement

André Onana

According to Fabrizio Romano, Manchester United stand to receive a modest loan fee of up to £1.3 million ($1.7 million) from Trabzonspor, contingent on Onana's performances throughout 2026–27.

The arrangement is also strictly temporary, as the loan deal is reported to contain no purchase option or obligation to buy. This means Onana will be required to return to Manchester at the end of the season unless further talks are held before next July.

Notably, Trabzonspor are expected to cover the "majority" of Onana's wages. Given that he is contractually due a pay increase this summer following United's Champions League qualification, this element of the deal is vital in relieving a considerable financial strain on the club.

The Cameroonian international still has two years remaining on his United deal. Come next summer, the club may look to secure a permanent transfer, explore a mutual contract termination a year ahead of schedule, or arrange a third loan that would see him enter free agency in 2028.

What Onana Leaving Means for Man Utd's Goalkeeper Department

Tom Heaton, Senne Lammens

Some form of Onana departure this summer had been widely anticipated, with very few expecting him to remain in Manchester and accept a reserve role behind Lammens.

However, his exit does raise the probability that a new goalkeeper will need to be brought in specifically as a No. 2. Altay Bayındır, who started the season between the posts before Lammens was handed his opportunity in October, is also expected to seek a move in pursuit of regular first-team football. Bayındır had been a regular starter at Fenerbahçe prior to his 2023 move to England but has managed just 17 appearances since.

Despite being included in Türkiye's World Cup squad this summer, a consistent run of form over the next few seasons could put him in contention to challenge current first choice Uğurcan Çakır ahead of Euro 2028.

United have already secured veteran third-choice keeper Tom Heaton on a one-year contract extension and are expected to pursue dependable experience for the No. 2 position that is now available.

Karl Darlow, Sam Johnstone and Angus Gunn have all been mentioned as potential targets in that regard. Bringing in any one of the trio — all currently free agents — would further cement Lammens's status as first choice while providing a reliable short-term option should the Belgian suffer an injury.
