Andreas Christensen Breaks Silence on Barcelona Future: "I've Made My Intentions Crystal Clear"

Hansi Flick's inaugural campaign at Barcelona was virtually perfect, as the team surpassed all predictions by controlling Spanish football and achieving their maiden domestic treble.

However, for Andreas Christensen, the 2024–25 season proved to be a nightmare. Physical setbacks limited the Danish defender to merely six appearances across the entire campaign. Following his participation in Barcelona's opening match in August 2024, he remained sidelined until the closing weeks of April.

Now in his final contracted year at Barcelona, Christensen is determined to reverse his luck. Speaking to journalists before Barça's Champions League encounter with Newcastle United, when questioned about his contractual status, he expressed his clear desire to remain at the club.

"My intention is to remain here," Christensen stated. "I communicated this clearly to the organization during the summer. I declined national team duty for this purpose, wanting to return properly. Last season was particularly challenging for me individually, and I wanted to handle everything correctly. I informed the club of my exact strategy: refuse national team selection and return early to ensure my physical condition was optimal for an intensive preseason, taking things gradually.

Christensen: Extended Barcelona Stay Depends on My Performance

"At this point, I believe it's my responsibility to deliver and see what develops. I've consistently communicated my emotions and affection for this institution, and staying has always been my desire. This has been my strategy—my individual objective—from the beginning."

Many anticipated the 29-year-old defender would depart during the summer window due to the surplus of center-backs and Barcelona's urgent financial needs to register new signings.

The situation shifted dramatically when Iñigo Martínez unexpectedly departed on a free transfer to Al Nassr. Christensen's value increased significantly following that move, and he has already participated in two fixtures this campaign, including one as a starter.

The former Chelsea youth product understands he will receive opportunities to demonstrate his capabilities this season, hoping for a contract renewal that would keep him at Barcelona beyond summer 2026.

"With such a packed fixture list [this season], chances will always arise. It's simply about demonstrating your quality in every match, staying prepared when summoned, and being ready for each opportunity while enjoying the experience."
