Angel Correa Set to Make Shocking Exit from Atletico Madrid for Liga MX Move

Argentine striker Ángel Correa, who claimed victory in the 2022 FIFA World Cup, is set to depart from Atlético Madrid after the 2025 Club World Cup concludes, with Mexican club Tigres securing his signature.

Speculation regarding Tigres' interest in acquiring Correa's services first emerged in March, occurring two months prior to the end of the Liga MX Clausura 2025 campaign. Following the season's completion, these reports gained significant momentum until both Cesar Luis Merlo and Fabrizio Romano verified the complete agreement.

The transfer sum that Tigres will remit to Atlético Madrid is approximately $10 million (€8.6 million), with Correa set to pen a five-year contract with the Liga MX outfit that has captured eight championship titles.

Following just one professional campaign, Correa made his move to Atleti in January 2015. Throughout his ten-year tenure in Spain's capital city, Correa participated in 467 matches while netting 88 goals. During the most recent campaign, Correa took part in 47 contests across various tournaments under Simeone's guidance, finding the back of the net eight times and providing five assists.

From the beginning of 2025, Liga MX has witnessed a surge in prominent players making their way to the Mexican league. James Rodríguez secured a move to Club León in early January, and merely weeks afterward, his former Real Madrid colleague Sergio Ramos made a similar transition by joining Monterrey.

Tigres refused to remain passive while witnessing Monterrey—their fierce cross-town adversaries—complete such an acquisition without making their own statement signing. However, unlike Ramos and James, Correa will enter Liga MX at just 30 years of age, possessing considerable playing years ahead of him.

This marks not the first occasion Tigres have made a significant impact in the transfer window. Throughout the previous decade, the organization has demonstrated their financial strength by attracting international talents to their squad, with former French international André-Pierre Gignac—who holds the record as the club's top scorer—serving as the prime illustration.

With Correa's addition to what was already among the nation's strongest squads, anticipations will reach extraordinary levels for Tigres when the Apertura 2025 season commences, as the team aims to secure their sixth Liga MX championship since 2015.
