Nearly nine hours after the originally scheduled announcement, Barcelona officially confirmed the acquisition of England international Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United.
Although Barça's interest had been known for some time, formal transfer talks for a summer deal accelerated quickly over recent days, culminating in an offer of approximately $93 million (€80 million) submitted on Wednesday.
Within 24 hours, Gordon had put pen to paper in Barcelona — though not before a series of paperwork complications left those in attendance waiting for over eight hours.
Standing before a visibly impatient press contingent in a sharp double-breasted jacket, Gordon was immediately confronted with questions about the lengthy delay to his official presentation.
"I can't explain it, I really don't know," he said with a shrug. "It's things I don't fully understand. My side of it was done — I've been ready for two days. It was out of my hands, legal matters and very fine details, I think."
"I always knew it would come together," Gordon continued. "I stayed calm at the hotel, just waiting with my family and my agents. But I'm incredibly excited, so it was pretty tough to be patient."
Barcelona's Immense Summer Shopping Spree Begins

Barcelona's prolonged struggle with financial instability has been a recurring story at Camp Nou for years. While the club's situation in 2026 is considerably more stable than in previous seasons, money was still anticipated to present certain obstacles for the reigning La Liga champions.
The move for Gordon, then, caught many off guard — especially given that Bayern Munich had appeared to be the frontrunners for his signature, with several Premier League clubs also expected to enter the race. All competing suitors were left behind.
Barcelona's transfer activity may not stop there. Just hours before Gordon's deal was finalized, the club lodged a $116 million (€100 million) bid for Atlético Madrid forward Julián Alvarez.
Talks over the Argentine international remain ongoing and are expected to prove far more complex than the Newcastle deal, with Atlético reluctant to bolster a direct rival — particularly one that just claimed the league title.
Whether Barcelona's financial capacity will allow them to increase their offer for Alvarez or pursue additional targets is still unclear. Even this level of expenditure seemed unlikely for the Blaugrana, yet president Joan Laporta and the club's board have evidently been working diligently to prepare for a major summer overhaul.
Centre-back remains a position of concern for Barcelona, while supporters also have reservations on both flanks of the defence, with a decision on João Cancelo's future needing to be addressed soon. The Portugal international has impressed since joining in January and has openly expressed his wish to remain at the club.
There is also the matter of fellow loanee Marcus Rashford, who is still awaiting a definitive answer on his future. Despite a strong stint at Camp Nou, Barça have been reluctant to activate the $35 million (€30 million) purchase option to sign him permanently from Manchester United. The arrival of Gordon, combined with a potential deal for Alvarez, leaves the 28-year-old in an increasingly precarious position.
