Anthony Gordon looks set to become the summer's first major transfer as he edges closer to a staggering €80 million (£69.3 million, $93.2 million) move to Barcelona.
The Newcastle United winger had long been expected to depart at the end of the season amid growing speculation, but Barça moved quickly to fend off interest from the likes of Bayern Munich, Arsenal, and Liverpool.
The allure of Camp Nou was always going to prove irresistible for Gordon, with his future expected to be resolved before he joins England's squad for the 2026 World Cup in the weeks ahead.
Gordon would become only the third Englishman to represent La Blaugrana and could inherit a storied shirt number in Catalonia.
Anthony Gordon Shirt Number History

Gordon has worn a range of shirt numbers throughout his career. Beginning with No. 70 on his Everton debut as a youth academy product in 2017–18, the Liverpool-born winger was upgraded to No. 42 two seasons later as he secured a more regular role in the Toffees' senior setup.
Gordon then flipped that number in 2020–21, wearing the No. 24 jersey in the first half of the season at Everton, before switching back to No. 42 during a loan stint at Preston North End for the remainder of the campaign.
He then took on the No. 10 in his final campaign at Everton before completing his move to Newcastle, where he has also sported that iconic number. However, during his debut season at St James' Park, he wore the No. 8 while waiting for Allan Saint-Maximin to give up his preferred shirt.
With England, the situation has been far less consistent. As is typical at international level, Gordon has been assigned various numbers over the years, among them No. 18, 17, 11, and 7.
Barcelona Available Shirt Numbers

Several prominent shirt numbers are currently up for grabs at Camp Nou ahead of Gordon's potential arrival, most notably the No. 9 being vacated by Robert Lewandowski. Once the Polish striker departs as a free agent this summer, the jersey previously worn by legendary attackers Luis Suárez, Zlatan Ibrahimović, Samuel Eto'o, and Ronaldo will be available.
As Barça are also pursuing a new centre-forward this summer, they may prefer to keep the No. 9 unassigned for now. Fortunately for Gordon, both the No. 12 and No. 14 are currently available, with the latter having been worn by Marcus Rashford during his loan spell at the club.
The No. 7 and No. 15 could also become available should Ferran Torres and Andreas Christensen leave this summer, while João Cancelo's No. 2 will be free once his loan concludes — should Gordon fancy a more unconventional option.
With La Liga restricting first-team squad numbers to between one and 25, Gordon's choices remain fairly limited.
