Antoine Griezmann Dazzles in His Highly Anticipated Orlando City MLS Debut

Antoine Griezmann made a dazzling MLS debut, with the 2018 World Cup champion netting a goal and showcasing his all-around brilliance as Orlando City cruised to a dominant 4–0 victory over Western Conference frontrunners, San Jose Earthquakes. 

Deployed as a target striker, Griezmann wowed the crowd with his first-touch quality and incisive passing throughout the match, while his intelligent movement pulled defenders out of position and created openings for his teammates. 

His chemistry with playmaking midfielder Eduard Atuesta was particularly notable, with Atuesta collecting assists on three of Orlando's four goals. Meanwhile, Canadian World Cup starting goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau delivered a standout display between the posts, recording seven saves, including several top-corner stops.

Griezmann's opening moments were a preview of what was to come, as he began generating chances almost immediately after kickoff. He first attempted a lofted chip from range after spotting fellow MLS newcomer and San Jose goalkeeper Angus Gunn off his line — the ball drifted wide, but it served as an early warning from the French forward. 

Shortly after, Griezmann threaded a precise through ball to Thiago Carvalho, splitting the defense and setting up a one-on-one opportunity for the Brazilian. A few minutes later, he delivered a pinpoint cross for David Brekalo, whose 12th-minute header was denied by Gunn — just moments after Brekalo had already broken the deadlock from a similar situation. 

Throughout the entire first half, the former Atlético Madrid forward displayed relentless energy and intensity. Beyond the chances he created, he also won two fouls with sharp bursts down the right flank during moments when he drifted wide to allow underlapping runs from Atuesta and Iván Angulo, both of whom were key contributors in attack. 

Griezmann Takes on Chance Creation Role

Despite occupying the top position in Orlando's 4-4-2 formation, Griezmann regularly dropped deeper in possession, allowing teammates to build momentum before threading perfectly timed balls through San Jose's defensive structure, breaking lines and manufacturing opportunities. 

He maintained a constant connection with Atuesta across the full 90 minutes — at times letting Atuesta surge forward to deliver the final pass, and at other times doing so himself while Atuesta held the team's attacking shape or initiated second-phase plays. 

Although Griezmann registered only two shots, including his goal, his vision was exceptional — repeatedly finding 19-year-old Justin Ellis with line-breaking passes. He also excelled at quick combinations near the top of the final third, repeatedly releasing Angulo in behind during the second half, finishing the night with five chances created and an Expected Assists figure of 0.44.

All that creative output didn't diminish his goal-scoring instincts either, as he demonstrated with his clinical finish in the 48th minute, right after the halftime interval.

Griezmann's Goal

Griezmann has found the net against elite defenders and organized backlines throughout his career. Wednesday's opponents were not at that level, and he ruthlessly exploited the Earthquakes' disorganized defensive shape, finding himself unmarked in front of goal before calmly waiting out the onrushing defenders and slotting past Gunn. 

The opportunity arose from a costly turnover by San Jose, which left Griezmann in an unexpectedly favorable position. He quickly decided to cut onto his left foot, using the defender's forward momentum to neutralize the challenge, before driving his left foot through the ball and guiding it into a tight space along the ground at the near post.

It was one of only two shots Griezmann attempted on the night, yet it underscored just how lethal he can be in those decisive moments — and how he can anticipate a defensive mistake before capitalizing on it, as he did by reading the defender's momentum.

Wednesday's result was a commanding statement from Orlando against the top side in the Western Conference this season. It provides significant optimism heading into the second half of the campaign, with Griezmann immediately inserting himself into the MLS Newcomer of the Year discussion.
