Antoine Griezmann Eyes Blockbuster MLS Move to Challenge Lionel Messi's Dominance
Atlético Madrid striker Antoine Griezmann is said to be in "advanced negotiations" with Orlando City regarding a potential switch to Major League Soccer.
The 34-year-old player, whose contract with Los Colchoneros runs through June 2027, has been connected to a United States move since expressing his long-term "goal" of playing in MLS. What's more unexpected than his possible departure is which team is currently favored to secure his services.
Per The Athletic, Orlando are targeting the 2018 World Cup champion to occupy their available Designated Player position. While no formal agreement exists between both sides, discussions have been progressing, with the club's sporting director and general manager Ricardo Moreira making several trips to Spain to advance negotiations.
The report indicates that official discussions between Atlético Madrid and Orlando have yet to begin, though the Lions aim to finalize the agreement before MLS's main transfer window ends on March 26.
Why Orlando Are the Frontrunners for Griezmann's Signature

Griezmann has been associated with several MLS teams throughout the years, including San Diego FC and Los Angeles FC. Logically, joining either of these prominent clubs that topped the Western Conference last season would seem ideal for a player of the Frenchman's caliber and reputation.
However, Orlando, who only achieved a ninth-place regular season standing and have never captured MLS Cup, possess Griezmann's MLS discovery rights, granting them priority in signing the player.
The Lions have attracted notable figures previously, including Real Madrid icon Kaká and former Portugal midfielder Nani. Nevertheless, they have been without marquee talent recently, creating an opportunity for Griezmann to emerge as the club's new flagship player.
Orlando's available DP position also simplifies the Florida move, unlike if the Atlético Madrid star wished to join teams like Inter Miami. Rather than partnering with Lionel Messi, Griezmann could potentially renew his rivalry with the Argentine by signing with the Herons' regional competitors.

While Orlando allegedly seeks to secure Griezmann as soon as possible, it seems improbable the player would abandon his current situation mid-European season. Atlético Madrid may be eliminated from La Liga title contention, but they remain competitive in the Champions League and Copa del Rey.
Griezmann is also experiencing a resurgence after a sluggish beginning to 2025–26. The Frenchman has scored 12 goals in all competitions this season and has returned to receiving fairly regular playing time under Diego Simeone.
The more plausible scenario would involve Griezmann completing the season with the Spanish club before relocating to Florida. A summer transfer could also provide the striker ample time to adjust to life in the United States while MLS takes a short break for the 2026 World Cup.
