Argentina and Switzerland bring the whirlwind of World Cup quarterfinal action to a close this summer in what is, on paper, the most one-sided matchup of the round on Saturday.
Lionel Messi's reigning champions have remarkably steered clear of the tournament's powerhouses this summer, navigating a quiet group stage before facing first-timers Cabo Verde and an Egypt squad that had never claimed a World Cup victory prior to 2026.
That said, Switzerland can draw plenty of encouragement from the fact that Argentina labored in both knockout encounters. Cabo Verde pushed the South American giants to extra time after they eased off following Messi's opening goal, while Egypt stormed into a 2–0 advantage. Yet on both occasions, Argentina found a way to come through.
Switzerland's route to the quarterfinals has been far less eventful. A flat 2–0 win over Algeria in the round of 32 offered little excitement, followed by a scoreless stalemate with Colombia that was ultimately settled via penalty shootout. Switzerland may enter as underdogs, but that label has meant little in other matches throughout this summer's tournament.
