Argentina Boss Exposes Emiliano Martinez's Devastation After Man Utd Transfer Collapse

Emiliano Martínez remains "content" even though his hoped-for summer move to Manchester United failed to come to fruition after the Old Trafford outfit chose a different path.

The goalkeeper's desire to depart Aston Villa became evident during the final weeks of the previous campaign, leading to what seemed like an emotional goodbye to supporters.

United were believed to be considering their alternatives, but ultimately decided to pursue a deal for rising Belgian prospect Senne Lammens instead. In a twist of fate, Villa had been eyeing Lammens as a possible successor to Martínez.

After serving a season-opening ban for the dismissal he received at Old Trafford on the campaign's last day, the Argentine featured in Villa's subsequent match against Brentford. However, with his situation remaining unclear as the transfer window neared its close, Martínez was omitted from last weekend's loss to Crystal Palace.

He has now departed for South America to join his national team.

"Emi is doing well. Ultimately, his move didn't materialize, but [Tuesday] marked his birthday and I observed him in good spirits," Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni informed journalists during a media briefing.

"Naturally, he would have been thrilled about the prospect of representing Manchester United, as reports suggested, but he's an optimistic individual. He's already concentrated on our team, and upon returning to his club, he'll be dedicated to them. I found him in good form."

Villa were reportedly prepared to present Royal Antwerp with a superior offer for Lammens compared to United, but the player personally wished to fulfill his lifelong aspiration by signing with the Red Devils.

"At age five [in 2007], United was dominating football and you retain memories of how prestigious Manchester United is, so when I learned of their interest, it felt like a boyhood fantasy," he explained.
