Arne Slot Drops Crucial Update on Alexander Isak's Injury That Could Change Everything

Alexander Isak is set to rejoin Liverpool's training sessions this week following a three-month absence due to a fractured leg and ankle injury.

The Premier League's record signing sustained the injury in a collision that occurred while netting against Tottenham Hotspur just five days before Christmas.

Having been on the sidelines since then, Isak is scheduled to rejoin full team training on Thursday.

"I think Alex is in a really good place because Sweden qualified for the World Cup yesterday evening, and apart from that he's going to train with the group again for the first time tomorrow," Slot disclosed in a short interview with Liverpoolfc.com on Wednesday.

"If you've worked so hard for three, four months or something like that and then to return to team training, that's for everyone [is] very nice. So, Alex is, in that sense, in a good place."

Isak Comeback Date Not Set

Rejoining group training is not the final hurdle. Having battled fitness concerns throughout the season following a summer in which he pushed hard to leave Newcastle United, the Swedish forward will require additional time to build himself back into match-ready condition.

"It's only his first session after three or four months [out], but it's good to have him back because we all know who we signed, and we've signed an incredible striker," Slot continued.

"To have him again in a team that's usually generating quite a lot of chances—and maybe not immediately he can start—for the last two months [of the season] is, I think, very helpful for us."

Liverpool head to Manchester City in the FA Cup on April 4, a fixture Isak is almost certainly going to miss. Following that, the Reds enter Champions League quarterfinal action against Paris Saint-Germain, with the two legs of that tie flanking a Premier League encounter with Fulham.

Isak Has Plenty to Prove

Alexander Isak helped off pitch by Liverpool staff.

Seven months on from a $168.75 million (£125 million) move that made him the costliest player in English football history, Isak can arguably be considered one of the most disappointing signings of the 2025–26 campaign so far.

He arrived short of fitness and didn't register his first Premier League goal for the club until late November. The strike against Spurs that led to his injury was only his second league goal for Liverpool.

Liverpool brought in a striker who had netted 52 goals for Newcastle across all competitions over the previous two seasons. Yet this version of Isak will be fortunate to reach double figures this term.

With Mohamed Salah departing at the end of the season, a significant gap in Liverpool's primary goal-scoring output will soon emerge. Isak must get himself into a position where he can step up and fill that role.
