Arne Slot Fires Back at Wayne Rooney's 'Aura' Attack While Making Shocking Confession

Arne Slot has responded to detractors by pointing out he's secured the same number of Premier League championships as Jürgen Klopp, following Wayne Rooney's claim that the Liverpool boss doesn't possess the same "presence" as his forerunner.

Slot has witnessed Liverpool fall from competing for last season's championship to battling for top four/five positions and Champions League spots within months—it's worth noting that Klopp faced a comparable decline the campaign following his only Premier League triumph in 2019–20.

However, mounting pressure on Slot stems from erratic performances, with Rooney suggesting that while the Dutch manager is a "decent guy," he lacks "that presence about him" when compared to Klopp.

When these remarks were presented to Slot ahead of Liverpool's Premier League clash with Nottingham Forest this weekend, he questioned the "fairness" of such comparisons.

"The sole similarity between Jürgen and myself is that we've both claimed the title—and that's quite respectable, isn't it? I believe the more victories a manager achieves, the greater presence he commands. That's generally how it works."

From this results-oriented viewpoint, Slot continued: "Last campaign I possessed more presence than this season.

"Perhaps [Rooney] stands alone with this viewpoint … it's my first encounter with such commentary, but I believe it's reasonable to acknowledge that Jürgen certainly commands presence. I can speak about him, not myself, but he undoubtedly possessed that quality. However, a successful manager also radiates presence."

Jürgen Klopp

Klopp served as Liverpool's manager from October 2015 through May 2024, a tenure lasting nine campaigns, and he personally determined his eventual exit from the club rather than being forced out.

Slot has already faced intense examination in merely his second year at the helm, having guided Liverpool through their poorest sequence of results in over seven decades earlier this season.

Meanwhile in Manchester, Pep Guardiola approaches the conclusion of his tenth campaign managing City.

Slot considers it more "challenging" to remain in one position for such extended periods nowadays. "There's significantly more discussion surrounding football, far more than a decade ago. The instant you begin losing one or two matches now, there's considerably more commentary and focus placed on it. This makes the role more demanding. I believe the position has grown more difficult due to all the media spotlight."

The relentless examination and psychological exhaustion that led Guardiola to step away from management in 2012, along with recently affecting Xavi Hernández at Barcelona, has been present in La Liga for much longer. Klopp mentioned "depleting energy reserves" when his planned Liverpool departure was revealed in January 2024 and hasn't returned to club management nearly two years after leaving. Slot now indicates that Pep's greatest achievement beyond trophies is his longevity.

"Jürgen performed excellently, Pep performed excellently, but the greatest achievement might be maintaining this role for a decade, because it's demanding work, I can assure you. Many individuals work hard, but it's also psychologically taxing," he acknowledged.

This all suggests that Slot, whose initial Liverpool contract runs until the 2026–27 season's conclusion, will likely depart well before matching Klopp's nine-year tenure, which he would exceed if still at Anfield by summer 2033. Currently, that timeline seems incredibly distant.
