Arne Slot Handed Shock Liverpool Escape Route As Owners Reveal Their True Position

Arne Slot was reportedly approached as a potential managerial target for Dutch heavyweights Ajax ahead of the upcoming summer. The struggling Eredivisie club are believed to have been promptly turned down, further demonstrating Liverpool's unwavering support for their current head coach.

Slot would be an obvious fit for Ajax. The former Dutch youth international claimed the Netherlands top-flight title as Feyenoord's manager and guided AZ Alkmaar to the verge of an unlikely championship before the COVID-19 pandemic brought the season to a halt. Ajax were Slot's nearest rivals during his tenure in the league, but the Amsterdam club have experienced a sharp and troubling decline in recent times.

The four-time European champions currently sit fourth in the Dutch top flight, 23 points behind leaders PSV Eindhoven with just two games left in a dismal campaign. Interim boss Óscar García is expected to leave the club at the end of the season, and sporting director Jordi Cruyff has been casting a wide net in search of potential replacements.

Mike Verweij of Dutch outlet De Telegraaf recently disclosed that Ajax had made inquiries regarding Slot's availability. Those efforts proved "futile."

"Slot is still firmly in the driver's seat; he's just carrying on at Liverpool," Verweij reported with conviction. "I also understand that Arne Slot isn't particularly keen on joining Ajax at this point in his career."

The idea of Slot's secure standing as Liverpool manager—despite a deeply disappointing title defence in the Premier League—has been communicated clearly and consistently. The club's supporters may find themselves at odds with the board, but co-owner John Henry is not someone who bends easily to outside pressure.

Liverpool Co-Owner's Stance on Fan Unrest

John Henry

"Fans get frustrated," said the head of Liverpool's parent company, Fenway Sports Group (FSG), to the Sports Business Journal this week. With a majority stake in MLB franchise the Boston Red Sox, along with investments in the NHL and NASCAR, Henry has grown accustomed to criticism.

"The Sox looked terrible for [their] first 25 games," Henry continued. "I remember a plane flying overhead when we [Liverpool] were beating Manchester United 7–0 that read 'FSG OUT!'

"It doesn't mean you ignore them, it means you work harder—you don't settle for mediocrity. You have to win."

Over FSG's 16-year stewardship of Liverpool, Henry has dismissed only two managers. Roy Hodgson, who was appointed just months before the takeover in October 2010, was let go in January 2011.

Brendan Rodgers guided Liverpool to a runners-up finish in 2013–14 before the club slumped to sixth the following year. Henry held off from dismissing Rodgers during the summer of 2015 before eventually making the decision in October.

Sunday's defeat to Manchester United was Liverpool's 18th loss of the season across all competitions, the highest tally the club has recorded since those troubled times under Rodgers. When Slot became the first Liverpool manager to suffer five consecutive defeats to English opposition since the post-war era, he maintained that the board continued to back him.

At that stage of the season, there seemed to be a genuine risk that Liverpool could miss out on Champions League qualification — a catastrophic outcome for the club's finances following such a lavish summer outlay in 2025. However, with a place at Europe's elite level now virtually guaranteed, Slot appears well-positioned to retain his role.
