Arne Slot Reveals His 'Logical' Choice for Liverpool's New Vice-Captain

Arne Slot has appointed left-back Andy Robertson as Liverpool's new vice-captain for the 2025–26 campaign.

Virgil van Dijk serves as Liverpool's captain and received backing from Trent Alexander-Arnold during the previous season, however Alexander-Arnold's summer transfer to Real Madrid required Slot to select a new second-in-command to the Dutch defender.

Robertson, who leads Scotland on the international stage, represented the "obvious" choice according to Slot.

"It's Robbo," Slot told the media. "He has been at this club for numerous years, claimed the title on two occasions.

"The hierarchy was Virgil, Trent, Robbo and Mo [Salah] during the last campaign. With Trent's exit, there are numerous clear-cut reasons behind this choice. [Robertson] is an exceptional player, features regularly, understands the requirements, while also grasping the club's ethos and locker room dynamics.

"Beyond all the talent he demonstrates on the field, he also contributes significantly to the atmosphere we maintain at this institution, which represents, as I've mentioned repeatedly during the previous season, the greatest present I could receive from Jürgen [Klopp].

"That's something we must certainly preserve for whoever follows me to maintain, this identical atmosphere, should I ever depart this organization."

Robertson encountered questions about his future during the summer window when Liverpool's pursuit of Milos Kerkez became apparent, with the player ultimately arriving from Bournemouth in a £40 million ($54 million) transaction.

The Scottish defender openly expressed his desire to remain and compete for his position in Slot's first team. To date, Robertson hasn't featured in the starting eleven this season, appearing as a substitute twice while remaining unused during the 3–2 victory against Newcastle United.

Robertson enters his contract's final year at Anfield and must make a decision regarding his future in the upcoming months should he continue trailing Kerkez in the squad hierarchy.
