Arne Slot Reveals Why He Shocked Everyone by Playing Dominik Szoboszlai at Right Back Against Newcastle

Liverpool implemented a fascinating tactical adjustment for Monday's Gameweek 2 clash against Newcastle: their midfield dynamo, Dominik Szoboszlai, was deployed as a right-back in the starting lineup.

A poorly-timed hamstring setback to Jeremie Frimpong compelled Liverpool boss Arne Slot to find a new solution for the defensive line, and instead of selecting a conventional defender, Slot opted for a player he has complete confidence in.

Slot validated this choice during his Sky Sports interview, elaborating on his reasoning for the Hungarian's positional change:

"Joe Gomez isn't quite prepared for a starting role yet, though he can make a difference when introduced during the match - beginning the game would be premature," Slot explained. "Our optimal choice is Dominik Szoboszlai. While he remains an attacking midfielder fundamentally, his exceptional work ethic and defensive capabilities made us believe he could excel in that position.

"Having Ryan Gravenberch available again is beneficial since his positional awareness surpasses that of the midfielders we fielded in our previous encounter. I anticipate Newcastle will engage in individual duels across the entire pitch. When they retreat into a defensive block, our fullbacks will have the liberty to advance."

Szoboszlai took his place in the back four alongside Ibrahima Konate, Virgil Van Dijk and Milos Kerkez, while alternative right-back options Conor Bradley and Joe Gomez started among the substitutes.

Liverpool implemented two additional squad modifications with Curtis Jones stepping in for Alexis Mac Allister, who was unavailable for selection, plus Gravenberch earning his spot in the midfield. Florian Wirtz maintained his customary No. 10 position.

Although Szoboszlai has occasionally featured as a fullback during Liverpool's preseason preparations this campaign, it's far from his natural habitat, and he undoubtedly offers greater impact through the middle of the park. Whether the talented midfielder will receive additional opportunities at right-back going forward, or if this represents a singular tactical experiment for Slot's revamped Liverpool team, remains to be seen.
