Arne Slot Sounds 'Alarm Bells' as Ibrahima Konate Suffers Devastating Injury Setback
Liverpool are awaiting a more comprehensive evaluation regarding the condition of defender Ibrahima Konaté, who was concerningly substituted early in the second half during Saturday's loss to Chelsea after "warning signals" emerged for Arne Slot.
Despite his inconsistent performances this campaign, Konaté has featured in all nine matches that Liverpool have contested in the Premier League and Champions League thus far. The French international has been the chosen companion for Virgil van Dijk since the beginning of the 2024–25 season.
With the Reds behind and requiring an equalizer when Konaté hobbled off after 56 minutes, Arne Slot chose a strategic adjustment rather than a direct replacement, bringing on midfielder Curtis Jones. Ryan Gravenberch finished the game in defense operating as a deep-lying distributor.
However, following the departure of Jarell Quansah during the summer and the loss of new signing Giovanni Leoni to a lengthy injury last month, Joe Gomez remains the sole recognized centre-back available to partner Van Dijk.
The October international pause has provided Liverpool with some respite, though it means there is no experienced backup in central defense should Konaté be sidelined for more than 10 days.
Slot indicated following the Chelsea match that Konaté was promptly removed at the initial indication of a potential issue to prevent it developing into a more serious injury, with the depth concerns possibly influencing that swift decision. He was already considering substituting the 26-year-old for tactical purposes, observing that Konaté was having difficulty distributing the ball effectively.
"I'm uncertain if it's a serious injury, but what I can confirm is he was limping slightly and when I questioned him he mentioned feeling his quadriceps. At that point, all warning signals activate because in another sprint you can never be sure if that will end well," the Liverpool manager explained.
"It was already a change I was contemplating, perhaps for a few minutes or slightly later, because the right centre-back had significant ball possession and we needed creativity from that area. We all understand Ryan excels in that role. It might be beneficial that he was withdrawn early enough but it was evident I had to substitute him because he was limping."
Konaté's Liverpool Future Still Uncertain
It remains feasible that this campaign could mark Konaté's final season as a Liverpool player. The five-year agreement he signed when arriving in a £36 million ($48.5 million) transfer from RB Leipzig expires this upcoming June and no accord on a new contract has been established—nor has one appeared probable for some time.
In that circumstance, Konaté could reach his contract's conclusion and become a free agent, with Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain the clubs most notably associated with a potential move.
The option for Liverpool, should he demonstrate minimal interest in prolonging his tenure at Anfield, is to attempt securing a purchaser in the January transfer market. This could align with the club's own objectives to acquire Crystal Palace captain Marc Guéhi, also out of contract next summer. Yet the troubling overall shortage of depth might justify pursuing two centre-backs this winter should Konaté depart.
