Arne Slot Turns Klopp's Past Struggles Into Blueprint for Liverpool's Revival

Arne Slot emphasized that his future as Liverpool's head coach wouldn't be determined solely by Champions League qualification—pointing out this wasn't the standard applied to Jürgen Klopp.

The defending Premier League titleholders are heading toward a catastrophic title defense. Liverpool have dropped significantly behind the frontrunners Arsenal, Manchester City and Aston Villa, while Chelsea and a rejuvenated Manchester United have pushed Slot's team down to sixth place.

Slot was questioned whether his role leading Liverpool might face examination if he concludes the campaign outside the top five, which would typically secure Champions League participation.

"That's another challenging question for me to respond to since I don't control my destiny," Slot responded. "What I do understand is that this occurred previously, quite recently, and it didn't impact that manager's future. However, that obviously doesn't promise anything."

Liverpool ended fifth, missing Champions League spots, during the 2022–23 season under Klopp. The Reds were also eliminated from both domestic tournaments in round four before exiting the Champions League in the round of 16. The German manager received support that summer transfer window, completely overhauling his midfield with the triple acquisition of Dominik Szoboszlai, Alexis Mac Allister and Ryan Gravenberch for a total £129 million (approximately $160 million then).

"Generally speaking, [regarding] managers, particularly at this institution—perhaps elsewhere it's primarily, though not exclusively, about outcomes—they also consider player development, team advancement, and sometimes circumstances are factored in," Slot contended.

"That's not universal at all clubs, but I believe I'm employed at an organization that examines these elements. As demonstrated previously when the club failed to secure Champions League qualification."

At first glance, there are numerous parallels between Liverpool's present season and the low point of 2022–23. Similar to this year, Klopp's squad was plagued by injuries. The abundance of fitness problems reached such levels that the German manager complained: "It felt like a curse was upon the building."

If anything, three seasons ago was more severe than this campaign—that specific team never occupied a position within the Premier League's top four during any gameweek.

Nevertheless, the glaringly apparent element that Slot overlooks is the stature of the people concerned. While he may possess the same number of Premier League championships as Klopp, Slot falls far short of the admiration held by supporters, the organization and the broader community. The season before Klopp guided Liverpool to fifth place, he received the freedom of Liverpool and was praised by Margaret Aspinall, a leading Hillsborough advocate, as "an exceptional person, an outstanding character and a remarkable humanitarian."

Slot still has considerable ground to cover regarding that reputation. Whether he'll receive the opportunity to expand upon what he's already established remains uncertain.
