John Stones is embracing a fresh challenge abroad, turning down Premier League interest from Arsenal and Chelsea to sign with Italian champions Inter Milan on a free transfer.
Stones left Manchester City when his contract expired last month. Despite making only 18 appearances across all competitions last season, he earned a spot in Thomas Tuchel's 26-man squad for the World Cup and played a significant part in England's run to the semifinals and a third-place finish.
The 32-year-old made an impressive impact off the bench in the round of 16 victory against Mexico, as Tuchel's side held firm against the hosts despite being reduced to ten men. He then played the full 90 minutes in the Three Lions' quarterfinal win over Norway before starting the tense semifinal loss to Argentina.
Although injuries plagued Stones throughout his time at City, he still holds a trophy cabinet rivaling any top Premier League center back, having claimed six titles. His World Cup performances demonstrated he remains a world-class defender when fit, and Inter will view his signing as a significant acquisition.
Stones to Sign Two-Year Inter Contract
It didn't take long for a club to move for Stones following this summer's World Cup, with the shrewd Inter poised to secure the experienced England international.
According to Sky Sports, Stones has given his verbal commitment to join the scudetto holders and is set to put pen to paper on a two-year deal before the week is out.
Inter's move is a disappointment for Premier League sides Arsenal and Chelsea, both of whom had been linked with the defender. Stones, notably, worked alongside Gunners manager Mikel Arteta when the Spaniard was serving as Pep Guardiola's assistant at Manchester City.
Juventus had also entered the running, but Beppe Marotta once again worked his magic to secure the deal for his club. Inter's CEO has long been regarded as a wizard in the free agent market.
With Italian football operating on tighter budgets compared to the Premier League, the Nerazzurri—Serie A's dominant force of the 2020s—have been inventive in reshaping their squad each summer. In recent seasons, Inter have brought in the likes of Hakan Çalhanoğlu, Piotr Zielinski and Henrikh Mkhitaryan on free transfers from domestic rivals AC Milan, Napoli and Roma.
Should the move be finalized, Stones will become only the fourth Englishman to represent Inter, following Gerry Hitchens, Paul Ince and Ashley Young. The 32-year-old is expected to help fill the void left by departing veterans Stefan de Vrij and Francesco Acerbi, likely anchoring Cristian Chivu's backline from the center of a three-man defense.

At this point, Arteta will simply be hoping to field a full squad for Arsenal's opening 2026–27 Premier League fixture against Coventry City. The Gunners' relentless pursuit of a league and Champions League double last season took a heavy toll, with numerous players carrying fitness issues into the summer.
One of Arsenal's biggest worries is William Saliba, who battled through back pain during the World Cup before his condition worsened in France's semifinal defeat to Spain.

The club confirmed last week that the Frenchman will follow a "managed recovery program" and does not need surgery. Nevertheless, he is anticipated to remain sidelined for an "extended period."
The news is likely to push Arsenal into the transfer market for a center back, which made Stones such an appealing target. Aston Villa's Ezri Konsa has also been mentioned as a potential option. Regardless, Cristhian Mosquera will be called upon to step up, though defensive depth is becoming a growing concern.
