Arsenal Eyes Rising Defensive Star as Kiwior's Future Hangs in Balance

Arsenal are reportedly exploring a possible transfer for Rennes defender Jérémy Jacquet following suggestions that Jakub Kiwior's future remains "uncertain".
Kiwior proved instrumental during the latter stages of last season, filling in effectively for the sidelined Gabriel. The Polish defender delivered standout performances during Arsenal's Champions League quarterfinal triumph against Real Madrid, earning high praise from head coach Mikel Arteta.
"He [Kiwior] merits significant recognition because he hadn't featured regularly for several months and was suddenly thrust into the most challenging circumstances," the Spanish manager declared in May. "Competing at the elite level against top-tier opposition without match fitness or rhythm, yet I believe his performances were outstanding."
Arteta reportedly wants to retain Kiwior, which likely influenced Arsenal's decision to turn down an approach from an undisclosed Portuguese team last month, as reported by Fabrizio Romano. Nevertheless, "multiple clubs" are said to maintain interest in the 25-year-old left-footed defender, who has not yet indicated his transfer intentions.

With Gabriel nearing recovery from the hamstring setback that ended his 2024–25 season early, Kiwior appears set to return to substitute duties as William Saliba remains established as the Brazilian's preferred defensive partner. The recent addition of Cristhian Mosquera, who can operate in both centre-back positions and at fullback, adds further competition for playing time.
Should Kiwior depart, Romano suggests that promising Jacquet could join as his replacement. Arsenal are believed to have established "preliminary discussions" with Rennes concerning a transfer for the 20-year-old French defender.
Jacquet recently signed a fresh four-year contract in May. The Rennes youth product was brought back from his loan at Clermont Foot in February and immediately integrated into the central defense. The imposing prospect excelled across various roles and tactical systems during the season's second half before securing his contract extension.
"Jérémy is an exceptionally bright, gifted individual who benefits from excellent support," Rennes CEO Arnaud Pouille praised upon the official announcement. Sporting director Loïc Désiré echoed these sentiments, stating: "He possesses outstanding attributes, especially his physical prowess, and displays remarkable composure and presence for someone his age. We anticipate he will achieve great success and continue developing with Stade Rennais F.C."
Should Arsenal not move for Jacquet this transfer window, he has been identified as a primary target for 2026.
