Arsenal face competition in their pursuit of 16-year-old Leicester City winger Jeremy Monga this summer, with Brentford reportedly entering the race as a rival suitor.
Monga, who celebrates his 17th birthday next month, made 30 appearances for Leicester throughout 2025–26, having originally broken into the Foxes' first team as a 15-year-old back in April 2025 when the club was still competing in the Premier League.
Arsenal invested heavily last summer in their quest to claim an English title for the first time in 22 years. That gamble paid off, and attention now seems to be shifting toward sustaining that success long-term—which may explain why Monga has been identified as the Gunners' "priority target" heading into next season.
However, Mikel Arteta's side risk being pipped to the post. The Times report that Brentford have "stepped up" their pursuit of the teenager, with "formal contact" from the Bees expected imminently.
Leicester's relegation from the EFL Championship at the close of 2025–26—meaning they'll compete in League One next season—makes Monga's exit all the more probable. That said, the Foxes stand to benefit financially, provided the youngster doesn't depart before July 10.
That date marks Monga's 17th birthday, at which point he becomes eligible to sign his first professional contract with Leicester. From then on, the club can negotiate and demand a transfer fee.
If Monga were to leave before putting pen to paper on a contract, Leicester would be bypassed in the process. The club would still be entitled to compensation—as is standard for free agents in England aged 23 or under—but the amount would be decided by a tribunal and could fall well short of market value.
Why Brentford Transfer 'Appeals' to Monga
Brentford's key advantage lies in their ability to offer Monga more consistent senior playing time than he might realistically receive at Arsenal. That prospect is said to hold genuine "appeal" for the player, who is eager to maintain the upward momentum of his development.
There is a real concern that limited and irregular opportunities at a club of Arsenal's stature could hamper rather than help his growth.
Brentford have an established reputation for nurturing talent that eventually moves on to elite clubs, with current Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya and Manchester United forward Bryan Mbeumo serving as prime examples.
Arsenal's Own Record-Breaker Faces Future Uncertain
Should Arsenal manage to win the race for Monga ahead of Brentford—an outcome that appears increasingly unlikely—it could have serious consequences for Ethan Nwaneri.
The academy-bred Gunners star holds the distinction of being the youngest player ever to appear in the Premier League, edging out even Monga, yet his once-dazzling potential has shown signs of stagnating. After struggling for minutes at Arsenal, Nwaneri spent the back end of 2025–26 on loan at Marseille, where he still only accumulated 322 minutes of Ligue 1 action.
Monga's arrival could further squeeze Nwaneri out, given that his role as a backup right winger had already been taken over by another teenage sensation, Max Dowman.
