Arsenal Hero Jeered by His Own Nation's Fans Even After Lighting Up the Scoreboard

England head coach Thomas Tuchel has expressed his "disappointment" upon learning that fans booed returning defender Ben White after the Arsenal man netted for the Three Lions in their clash against Uruguay on Friday.

Making his first England appearance since the 2022 World Cup, White was met with jeers from supporters at Wembley upon coming off the bench, and although his late strike was greeted with celebration, the public address announcement of his name drew another hostile reaction from the crowd.

"I didn't hear it on the field because I was involved in the changes and instructions," Tuchel said following the match.

"It cannot be the majority. There were some boos and a mixed reception for him, which I am disappointed about because we must of course protect our players.

"He was excellent in camp. He deserved to come on. He deserved to start as well and nearly gave us the winner. But I also understand that this has happened to other players here before.

"He needs to take it on the chin. We will always have his back and hopefully we can put it behind us, because he is ready to write some new chapters. We are ready to give him the opportunity, so hopefully everyone can move on and accept it."

Why Did England Fans Boo Ben White?

The divided reaction towards White traces back to the circumstances of his international absence since the 2022 World Cup.

White was part of the England squad during the winter of 2022 but departed the camp after just two matches. No official explanation has ever been provided, though widespread reports have suggested the Arsenal defender had a falling out with a member of former manager Sir Gareth Southgate's coaching staff, specifically assistant manager Steve Holland. It should be noted, however, that Southgate has denied those allegations.

When Southgate attempted to reintegrate White into the setup in 2024, he was promptly rebuffed. The former England boss confirmed that White had made it clear he had no interest in being considered for international selection.

Now, with Southgate and his backroom staff no longer in charge, White has accepted the call-up once more. He was brought in as a replacement for the injured Jarell Quansah, having initially missed out on Tuchel's extended 35-man squad.

The view among those England supporters who booed White is that, having previously declined to represent his country when called upon, he should not have been permitted to return.

Jordan Henderson Offers Support to White

White is far from the first player to be subjected to boos while wearing an England shirt.

Friday's skipper, Jordan Henderson, endured a fierce backlash following his move from Liverpool to Saudi Arabia in 2023, with many accusing the midfielder of contradicting his own public stance on human rights issues in favour of the financial rewards available in the Middle East.

His troubled stint with Al Ettifaq lasted only six months and did result in Henderson losing his place in the England squad in 2024. Tuchel recalled the now-Brentford midfielder during the summer of 2025 and, despite some uncertainty over his squad status, the hostility directed at Henderson had largely subsided.

"As teammates we are always there to support," Henderson reflected. "A lot of the fans will be behind all of the players.

"I have been through it myself, but that is part and parcel of being an England player.

"Some of the fans probably don't even know why they are booing — they go off what is being said in the media, and a lot of the time what the media reports isn't accurate. Not many people know the full story of what happened in Qatar and it is something for us to handle internally.

"Ben has been great since he came back in and we will back him as teammates.

"A few of us have been in that position — it is tough when it is happening to you, but you have to try not to take it too personally. The media can put a spin on things that isn't always the truth, and fans can pick up on that and take it as fact.

"It is really hard when that happens, so it is important for us to make sure he is O.K., which I am sure he is. I was thrilled he got on the pitch and scored — that is the most important thing."
