Arsenal Reveal Bold Havertz Call as They Gear Up to Face Atletico Madrid—Injuries and Predicted Lineup Unveiled

A home victory on Tuesday evening will send Arsenal through to their first Champions League final in nearly two decades.

It has been a relentless story of disappointment and despair since Sol Campbell handed the Gunners an early advantage in Paris 20 years ago. They were repeatedly outclassed by English rivals for a stretch before Europe's powerhouses dominated them throughout the 2010s.

Mikel Arteta's Arsenal have steadily grown since re-entering the competition in 2024. Quarterfinalists, then semifinalists — they're now pushing to go further still this time out.

Havertz Hope for Gunners

Kai Havertz

There have been positive signs on the injury front for Arsenal ahead of Tuesday's second leg.

Last week, Arteta expressed confidence in Kai Havertz's ability to recover in time for Atletico Madrid's visit, and the Gunners manager confirmed on Saturday that the German, along with skipper Martin Ødegaard, should feature at the Emirates Stadium.

Ødegaard sat out Saturday's victory over Fulham due to a minor knock.

Bukayo Saka was limited to just 45 minutes at the weekend despite shining in the opening half, though no injury was involved. It marked his first start since the Carabao Cup final, and Arteta chose to manage his workload carefully.

Mikel Merino could feature before the season concludes after undergoing foot surgery at the beginning of 2026, while Jurriën Timber is expected to remain sidelined. The Dutchman is managing a groin issue, and there is no clear timeline for the fullback's return.

Arsenal Predicted Lineup vs. Fulham (4-2-3-1)

Arsenal lineup

GK: David Raya—Raya has accumulated an impressive 14 Champions League clean sheets since the start of last season, and has conceded only once in Europe at the Emirates this campaign.

RB: Cristhian Mosquera—Arteta faces a couple of selection headaches at fullback, even with Timber unlikely to return midweek. The Spaniard went with Ben White last week but may lean toward the defensive reliability Mosquera brings when facing Ademola Lookman.

CB: William Saliba—In commanding form of late, Saliba has been virtually flawless during the run-in. Even so, he'll need to be at his sharpest to contain the shrewd Atléti side in north London.

CB: Gabriel—This looks like the kind of occasion where Gabriel's whole-hearted, physical defending will prove crucial.

LB: Piero Hincapié—Riccardo Calafiori may have done enough to earn a starting berth, with Hincapié unused against Fulham. It remains a genuine contest at left back, and Arteta could go either way.

CM: Declan Rice—Rice has been impressive in a deeper midfield position over the past week. In Madrid, the Englishman completed a match-high 83 passes while simultaneously shielding Arsenal from Atléti's counter-attacking threat.

CM: Martín Zubimendi—Swapping roles with Rice should free Zubimendi to recapture the form that earned him widespread praise in the first half of the season.

RW: Bukayo Saka—Saka was outstanding for 45 minutes at the weekend after delivering a lively cameo in the first leg. He appears to be moving freely and has a significant part to play on Tuesday night.

AM: Martin Ødegaard—The skipper was rested on Saturday evening, but Arteta hinted that Ødegaard would be back in the fold for Tuesday's clash.

LW: Eberechi Eze—The Englishman has the ability to produce moments of real quality, and he was outstanding as a substitute in Madrid. Eze could begin on the left before drifting inside to link up creatively with Ødegaard.

ST: Viktor Gyökeres—Composed from the penalty spot last week, Gyökeres is beginning to win over some doubters with his contributions during the business end of the season. He heads into the second leg having netted twice against Fulham at the weekend.
