Piero Hincapié is said to have picked up an injury during his standard post-match cool-down routine, casting a shadow over Arsenal's 2–1 win against Leeds United on Saturday.
A collective sigh of relief swept through the Emirates as the final whistle blew. Arsenal had stumbled through a disjointed display against a confident Leeds side yet still managed to secure all three points. The frustration etched on Mikel Arteta's face was eased by yet another show of the quality Arsenal's defending Premier League champions carry on the bench, with Bruno Guimarães entering the fray to net the decisive goal.
However, it is another substitute who has grabbed Arteta's attention for entirely the wrong reasons.

Hincapié was only introduced for the final eight minutes of Saturday's league encounter. As is customary for squad members who did not feature from the start, the Ecuador international took part in a post-match cool-down session. Yet, this injury prevention exercise ended with Hincapié heading to the treatment room. The Athletic references a privately obtained video showing the 24-year-old unable to bear weight on his right side as he was assisted off the pitch.
Arsenal have yet to provide an official update, and it remains uncertain how long Hincapié may be ruled out. Should the left back miss any upcoming matches, Arsenal's squad depth will be put to a genuine test.
How Arsenal Can Cope With Defensive Shortage

Hincapié had already been managing a fitness concern prior to this fresh setback. Without the tenacious left-footed defender, Arteta's only natural left back alternative is Riccardo Calafiori. That is far from a disaster; the Italian has made an impressive start to the campaign as Arsenal's dynamic attacking outlet from the back. However, Calafiori has shown a tendency to pick up minor injuries himself, particularly when asked to carry a heavy workload.
Arteta could call upon Myles Lewis-Skelly to fill in at fullback. This was the teenager's original pathway into the senior side before he transitioned into midfield, where Lewis-Skelly has performed so impressively alongside Declan Rice that even Guimarães cannot count on a starting berth. Nevertheless, the Brazilian's availability would give Arteta the flexibility to rotate centrally if Lewis-Skelly is pushed back into defence.
Jurriën Timber could alternatively be deployed on his less favoured left side, even if the right-footed defender never appears entirely at ease on that flank.
Beyond the fullback position, Arteta does not have a wealth of defensive cover. With William Saliba still making a cautious comeback from a serious back problem, Arsenal have just three centre backs available: Gabriel, Ezri Konsa, and Cristhian Mosquera. The latter, however, has not featured in a matchday squad since August as he continues to recover from a hamstring injury.
Arsenal face a relentless run of fixtures. The Champions League resumes on Tuesday with a home clash against French side Lille, before the Gunners hit the road to face Nottingham Forest and German champions Bayern Munich within the space of four days. Five matches are packed into the rest of October, and November opens with the daunting trip to face Liverpool at Anfield.
For Hincapié's sake and that of his teammates, there is plenty of hope that this injury proves less serious than it currently appears.
