Arsenal Star Raves About Viktor Gyokeres' Stunning Premier League Debut Performance

Arsenal began their 2025–26 campaign with a slender win against Manchester United at Old Trafford. The match also marked the much-awaited Premier League bow of the Gunners' new striker: Viktor Gyökeres.

The ex-Sporting CP forward led Arsenal's frontline from kick-off. Overall, it was an underwhelming first appearance for Gyökeres, who couldn't really influence proceedings and found it difficult to get into the match. It's evident that the Swedish player requires time to adjust to the high-tempo, robust nature of the Premier League following his success in the less challenging Portuguese top flight.

However, Arsenal colleague Bukayo Saka was questioned about his new offensive partner's first outing following the match, and he was eager to commend what he considered a promising initial showing from Gyökeres.

"I was pleased with his effort and he fought hard for the team," Saka commented. "It was challenging, there was intense competition up front. I believe he performed admirably."

"His display provides us with a foundation to work from and I'm confident it will benefit him in the coming week. He has integrated smoothly along with the other players," Saka continued.

Gyökeres spent most of the match competing against Matthijs de Ligt. While his link-up play was decent, he couldn't register a shot on goal. However, it should be noted that Arsenal's overall attacking display wasn't particularly impressive given they managed only three attempts on target as a collective.

It remains premature to criticize Gyökeres severely. The crucial aspect for Arsenal is that they started their campaign with a victory at a challenging venue. The triumph represented the Gunners' third away success at Old Trafford this decade—prior to that they hadn't secured victory at the Theatre of Dreams since 2006.

Gyökeres, Saka and the Gunners will be looking for a more dominant display in their next fixture, welcoming Leeds United to Emirates Stadium for their home opener on Saturday, Aug. 23.
