The Gunners were widely tipped before the season to cruise toward consecutive championships, but their failure to land a top-tier forward in the transfer window appears to have left things wide open. Meanwhile, Chelsea endured a chaotic 2025–26 campaign and finished well adrift, yet a fresh chapter has begun under the guidance of Xabi Alonso.
Emiliano Martínez's signing signals that the Blues mean business, and it would be very fitting for Chelsea to mirror their 2016–17 title charge under Antonio Conte's debut season. The absence of European competition worked in their favor back then, and it could do so again this time around, particularly with nearly half the division juggling continental commitments.
They have a golden chance to announce themselves on the big stage in a fixture that hasn't been particularly favorable for them in recent memory. Romelu Lukaku netted twice the last time Chelsea got the better of the Gunners.
Both managers, however, are anxious about the availability of key players heading into the match. Below is a rundown of the injury concerns ahead of Sunday's blockbuster North London showdown.
Arsenal
William Saliba
Arsenal fans began the season already aware they would be missing their standout center back for the opening run of matches. William Saliba is managing a back problem that he carried into the World Cup, which cut his semifinal appearance short.
The Frenchman has at least been included on Arsenal's Champions League squad list, making him eligible for their league phase games, though the exact timeline for his return remains uncertain. Mikel Arteta described Saliba's recovery as "positive" in recent weeks.
Even so, it will be some time before Saliba is back alongside Gabriel at the core of Arsenal's resolute backline.
Jurriën Timber
Jurriën Timber has had a difficult time staying fit since arriving at the club. Things got off to a rough start when he ruptured his ACL on his Premier League debut, causing him to miss the majority of his first season.
Timber is currently dealing with a groin problem that hampered the latter stages of his 2025–26 season. The Dutchman made it back for the Champions League final but was still ruled out of the World Cup, and was absent throughout preseason.
He is now working his way back to full fitness, with Arteta indicating the fullback is in a "good place." Timber has returned to training and is expected to be available before the season's first international break.
Cristhian Mosquera
Cristhian Mosquera has been a key reason Arsenal haven't felt the impact of Saliba's absence at the start of their title defense.
The Gunners are yet to concede a goal, with Mosquera partnering Gabriel in both matches so far. However, the Spanish international was forced off during the 1–0 victory at Aston Villa on Monday, immediately casting doubt over his availability for Sunday's London derby.
Arteta has eased concerns and even suggested Mosquera could feature against Chelsea, though he was not seen with the squad on the morning of the match. Should he be ruled out, Ezri Konsa is primed to fill in.
Bruno Guimarães
The former Newcastle United midfielder turned out to be Arsenal's standout summer acquisition, and there's little question that Bruno Guimarães is a game-changer.
His Arsenal career has gotten off to a sluggish start due to fitness setbacks, with Guimarães missing the opening-night win over Coventry City before coming on as a substitute at Villa Park. He has since picked up a knock in training, putting his involvement on Sunday in question.
Nevertheless, it is understood that Guimarães is included in Arteta's matchday squad.
Declan Rice
Declan Rice showed no signs of being a doubt for this fixture until Sunday morning when, per The Standard, he was absent from the squad's prematch walk.
The England international was substituted late in the previous game but showed no obvious signs of injury, and was even seen in training during the week. Supporters are now waiting anxiously for an update on his condition.
Chelsea
Moisés Caicedo
Fans were buzzing about the Declan Rice versus Moisés Caicedo midfield battle going into the opening meeting between these sides last season. The Chelsea midfielder was sent off in the first half, and Rice went on to drive Arsenal to the title.
Caicedo will be eager to make his mark against the champions, but a fitness concern has plagued him at the start of Alonso's tenure. The Ecuadorian's substitute appearance last weekend was short-lived, though he may still have a role to play on Sunday.
Alonso confirmed that Caicedo will be assessed in a late fitness test before kickoff.
Jordan Henderson
Jordan Henderson has yet to make his Chelsea debut after suffering an unusual injury while celebrating England's memorable World Cup triumph at the Estadio Azteca.
Reports suggest the midfielder has recently resumed training, and he could make his first appearance in Chelsea colors at some point during the current month.
Marco Palestra
Alonso's first signing as Chelsea manager was heavily involved during preseason but has yet to feature in a competitive fixture for the club.
Marco Palestra is hopeful of making his Blues debut in the near future, and while Sunday's derby may arrive too early for the Italian, Wednesday's Carabao Cup tie against fierce rivals Leeds United could present a realistic opportunity.
Emmanuel Emegha
A preseason injury has also pushed back Emmanuel Emegha's Chelsea debut, with the striker having joined the club from Strasbourg over the summer.
The timeline for Emegha's return from a hamstring complaint remains unclear, but Alonso has spoken enthusiastically about the 23-year-old's potential at Stamford Bridge, describing him as possessing "special qualities."
