Arsenal's 2026–27 Campaign: Can the Title-Hungry Gunners Etch Their Name in the History Books?

Arsenal's 2026–27 Campaign: Can the Title-Hungry Gunners Etch Their Name in the History Books?

Mikel Arteta has his sights set on joining a select group of managers who have successfully defended the Premier League crown, a feat accomplished by only three legendary bosses since the competition began.

Sir Alex Ferguson's iconic reign at Manchester United saw the Red Devils lift the trophy consecutively on numerous occasions, while José Mourinho achieved back-to-back titles with Chelsea during his opening two seasons in England. They were followed by Pep Guardiola in 2019, and City subsequently claimed four consecutive league crowns before Arne Slot's Liverpool finally ended their dominance.

City's stranglehold on the division has loosened, and the groundwork is laid for Arsenal to establish their own era of Premier League supremacy.

However, Arteta is fully conscious of how difficult defending a title can be. The long-time nearly-men have finally claimed the prize, and every rival will be gunning for the champions this campaign.

Many sides will be eager to swiftly dethrone the Gunners.

What Arsenal Hope to Achieve

Declan Rice

Arsenal should have coasted to the title last season, but ending long-standing droughts rarely comes without a struggle. They hadn't lifted the Premier League since 2004, and Guardiola's Man City remained in contention right up until the final week of the season.

Only City have successfully defended the title since Manchester United claimed their third consecutive crown in 2008–09, and several champions over the past decade have suffered notable dips during their title defense, including Liverpool last season.

Retaining the league title is Arsenal's top domestic priority, though supporters would likely trade back-to-back league success for a first-ever Champions League trophy. The Gunners' European journey has shown steady progress since their return to UEFA's elite club competition in 2023.

They appear on course to win the Champions League this season, having fallen to Paris Saint-Germain on penalties in last term's final. Arsenal are tantalizingly close, but PSG remain a formidable force, and the likes of Bayern Munich, Barcelona, and Real Madrid will mount fresh challenges.

Breaking a six-year trophy drought reduces the urgency to shine in domestic cup competitions, though supporters would never turn down a trip to Wembley. After a string of near-misses since their last FA Cup win in 2020, Arsenal will feel the time is right to flourish under the arch once more.

Arteta certainly has the squad depth to compete across multiple competitions.

Key Fixture Dates

Gabriel, Erling Haaland

Arsenal faced a tough opening to last season's Premier League campaign, yet navigated those early weeks without damage, setting the stage for their eventual title win.

This time around, the fixture compilers have shown more mercy to the Gunners, who encounter just one 'Big Six' opponent (Chelsea at home) in the opening eight weeks and one (Tottenham Hotspur away) in the final nine weeks of the season.

The second North London Derby, penciled in for May 1, could prove pivotal, particularly with Spurs expected to be stronger under Roberto De Zerbi's first complete season at the helm. The two sides first meet at the Emirates Stadium on Dec. 5.

Arsenal face Liverpool and Man City in consecutive weeks during the latter half of the season, but crucially deal with the majority of their toughest fixtures on paper before the title run-in begins.

Major Signings

Bruno Guimarães

Arsenal's bid to land Vinicius Junior ultimately fell short, but it nonetheless underscored the caliber of player the club is targeting to bolster an attack that struggled for consistency throughout 2025–26.

Christos Tzolis has been brought in as a replacement for Leandro Trossard, and it remains unclear who the Gunners consider their primary Vinícius Jr alternative.

Their most significant piece of business to date has been the £75 million acquisition of Bruno Guimarães from Newcastle United. The Brazilian immediately strengthens Arsenal's midfield and is expected to forge a solid, well-balanced partnership with Declan Rice.

Piero Hincapié's permanent move was always anticipated following his loan spell from Bayer Leverkusen last season, while Illan Meslier joins as the club's third-choice shot-stopper.

Ones to Watch, Breakout Stars

Max Dowman

Max Dowman was the standout name of last summer's preseason, and the 16-year-old showcased flashes of his natural brilliance throughout his debut senior campaign. Dowman notably delivered the decisive goal in Arsenal's 2–0 victory over Everton at the start of the run-in, and will look to take on a more influential role on the right wing this season.

Few other young players have truly stood out in preseason, with Dowman still the brightest prospect on show.

Myles Lewis-Skelly enjoyed a strong finish to the season and will be looking to carry that form forward, while Ethan Nwaneri has returned to north London—at least for now—following a disappointing loan stint at Marseille.

Midfielder Louis Copley, one of the academy talents who could have featured in the domestic cups, suffered an ACL tear in preseason and is expected to miss the entire 2026–27 campaign.

Season Prediction

Mikel Artet

History may be working against them, but Arsenal appear well-positioned to defend their Premier League crown. With uncertainty, upheaval, and question marks surrounding their title rivals, the Gunners represent the most reliable pick at the top.

That said, how comfortably they go back-to-back will likely hinge on how much they strengthen their attack before the summer transfer window closes. Additional cover on the right side of defense is also a pressing need.

The signing of Vinícius Jr would almost certainly have made them outright favorites, but the Brazilian's choice to remain at Real Madrid means Arsenal are still a highly efficient side lacking a genuine superstar in the final third. They are heavily reliant on Bukayo Saka being fit and in top form, which is far from certain.

A deep European run looks likely once again. Whether they can go all the way may well depend on how their domestic season unfolds. If Arsenal are comfortable in the Premier League, Arteta could shift his focus toward Champions League fixtures in the closing stages, keeping his key players fresh for the biggest occasions.

It appears further growth is needed for Arsenal to complete a historic double, but they are more than capable of adding a domestic cup to their trophy cabinet after ending their six-year silverware drought last season.
