Arsenal's appeal against the red card issued to Max Dowman during their midweek loss to Fleetwood Town has been rejected by the Football Association (FA).
The Gunners suffered a deeply humiliating Carabao Cup fourth round elimination at the hands of the League Two side, with Fleetwood ultimately prevailing in a penalty shootout after the match ended 1–1 in normal time.
Dowman received his marching orders for violent conduct in the 85th minute after lashing out at Harrison Neal. The 16-year-old reacted in frustration to a heavy challenge from the Fleetwood midfielder, which referee Michael Salisbury chose not to punish.
In response to Arsenal's failed appeal, the FA released a statement saying: "An independent Regulatory Commission has dismissed claims of both wrongful dismissal and excessive punishment for Max Dowman."
How Many Matches Will Dowman Miss?

In a blow for Arsenal, Dowman will now serve a three-match ban in domestic competition. The suspension begins with a Premier League fixture on Sunday, when the defending champions travel to face Liverpool.
That daunting challenge is followed by a more manageable away trip to Slavia Prague in the Champions League. Dowman will be eligible to feature in the Czech capital, as domestic bans do not extend to UEFA competitions.
Nevertheless, Dowman will be absent for Premier League fixtures on either side of the November international break — a home clash against Hull City and an away trip to Newcastle United.
The next domestic match the young midfielder will be available for is the high-stakes showdown with title contenders Manchester City on Nov. 29.
The Games Dowman Will Miss for Arsenal
Date | Opponent | Competition |
|---|---|---|
Nov. 1 | Liverpool (A) | Premier League |
Nov. 7 | Hull City (H) | Premier League |
Nov. 21 | Newcastle United (A) | Premier League |
Why Dowman's Absence Could Prove Costly

Under normal circumstances, Dowman's absence would not be a major concern for Mikel Arteta. The talented youngster remains a fringe player who seldom gets significant minutes in the Premier League or Champions League.
However, given the club's mounting injury problems, Arteta will be particularly frustrated by the timing of Dowman's three-game ban.
Arsenal are already missing first-choice right winger Bukayo Saka, who picked up a thigh injury during the recent Champions League encounter with Bayern Munich. The England international's return timeline remains unclear, though reports suggest he could be sidelined for approximately two months.
Compounding the issue, Christos Tzolis remains out on the opposite flank. The Greek attacker suffered a hamstring injury while on international duty, with Arteta confirming in mid-October that he would be unavailable for "weeks."
Noni Madueke is also uncertain for the weekend clash at Anfield after sitting out the Fleetwood game with an ankle problem. He is, however, expected to be fit in time for the fixture.
