Arsenal have confirmed that William Saliba faces an "extended period" on the sidelines as he recovers from a significant back injury, though the club confirmed surgery will not be necessary.
Saliba, who was a key figure in the Gunners' Premier League title win and their run to the Champions League final last season, has been managing the back problem since March. Reports had suggested the defender could miss the 2026 World Cup, yet he pushed through the discomfort during France's run to the semi-finals.
In his sixth outing of this summer's tournament, Saliba collapsed in visible pain during the match against Spain and had to be substituted. Les Bleus went on to fall 2–0 in that game before suffering a 6–4 loss to England in the third-place playoff, all while the full extent of Saliba's condition remained largely unconfirmed ... until now.
"Subsequent specialist reviews on William's return to London this week have confirmed that he has suffered a back injury which will require a period of rehabilitation," Arsenal stated in an official club announcement.
"Extensive assessments have concluded that surgery is not recommended, but William should now commence a managed recovery program. William's rehabilitation will commence immediately, with continual management of his injury, and he is expected to be out of action for an extended period."
The Bad News Could Be Worse
Arsenal supporters spent the past week bracing for the worst. There was a widespread belief that Saliba's injury would require an operation, which would have kept the Frenchman out for approximately four to five months.
The Gunners would have been deprived of their standout defender until around mid-December — a devastating scenario for Mikel Arteta's side, whose exceptional defensive record helped propel the club to its first Premier League title in 22 years last season.
Fortunately for Arsenal, Saliba will not need to go under the knife to return to full fitness. While the club stopped short of providing a precise timeline for the 25-year-old's recovery, it is expected to be shorter than initially anticipated.
Arsenal were keen to stress: "Everyone is fully focused on supporting William to ensure he is back to full fitness as soon as possible."
Arteta Has a Range of Internal Solutions
Despite avoiding surgery, Saliba still faces a prolonged absence. Arteta could look to the transfer market for a temporary solution to cover the centre-back's absence, but he already has several reliable options available within the squad at the Emirates.
Cristhian Mosquera featured alongside Gabriel on multiple occasions last season while Saliba dealt with various setbacks. The versatile Spaniard enjoyed an encouraging debut campaign in north London, adjusting reasonably well to the demands of the Premier League.
Ben White, who previously operated as a centre-back before transitioning to right-back, represents the more seasoned alternative for Arteta. However, the Englishman carries his own injury concerns, having missed the tail end of last season and the World Cup due to a medial knee ligament problem.
Piero Hincapié and Riccardo Calafiori are also available options. Both are capable of stepping in at centre-back, though both are left-footed, just like Gabriel. It would not be the most natural pairing, but the alternatives exist should Arsenal find themselves with limited choices.
