Arsenal's Treble Hopes Shattered as Southampton Stun Gunners in Heartbreaking FA Cup Defeat

Arsenal suffered a dramatic FA Cup exit at the quarterfinal stage, with the Premier League table-toppers falling 2–1 to Championship side Southampton at St Mary's Stadium.

The Gunners had hoped to rebound from their Carabao Cup final heartbreak by securing another Wembley appearance, but Ross Stewart's composed opener with 10 minutes remaining before half-time dealt a serious blow to those ambitions. The lower-league side thoroughly merited their advantage at the interval, having caused Arsenal considerable trouble with their direct, physical style.

Arsenal struggled to find a response after the break, but Mikel Arteta's triple substitution at the hour mark proved inspired. Viktor Gyökeres levelled the scores just eight minutes after coming on, finishing off a slick move down Arsenal's left flank.

However, Arsenal's tepid performance was duly punished five minutes before the final whistle, as former Manchester City academy product Shea Charles calmly slotted home from close range to send the Gunners crashing out.

Arsenal had harboured hopes of a historic quadruple heading into the international break, but consecutive domestic cup eliminations have now reduced their season to a battle on just two fronts.

Winners and Losers

Winners

Max Dowman

Following his standout performance against Everton, Max Dowman was firmly in the spotlight for his first outing since that pivotal cameo. The gifted 16-year-old lived up to the billing on the south coast, weaving past Southampton players with ease and producing Arsenal's most threatening moments. The fact that Arsenal needed a teenager to inject life into their display says everything.

Dowman can depart St Mary's with pride after registering 17 touches in the opposition box, completing three dribbles and delivering an outstanding overall performance. Sadly, the same could not be said for those around him.

Losers

Ben White

Jurriën Timber's absence had already caused headaches in the Carabao Cup final, with Ben White struggling at Wembley. This proved yet another difficult night for the England international, who was directly at fault for Southampton's opener as his poorly-timed jump allowed Stewart to chest the ball past Kepa Arrizabalaga. His performance deteriorated as the game wore on—and he was fortunate to escape without a booking despite a string of late challenges.

Up front, Gabriel Jesus endured an equally frustrating evening. The 29-year-old squandered a golden opportunity to cement his place in the starting lineup, contributing virtually nothing in the attacking third. His anonymity was thrown into sharp relief by Gyökeres' immediate impact from the bench.

Arsenal Player Ratings vs. Southampton (4-2-3-1)

Martin Ødegaard

*Ratings provided by FotMob*

GK: Kepa Arrizabalaga—6.5: Seldom tested by Southampton's attack and could do little about either goal.

RB: Ben White—5.6: Following a difficult international break, there was no improvement here. A costly error gifted Southampton the lead and he was repeatedly troubled by the lively Léo Scienza.

CB: Cristhian Mosquera—6.2: Covered for partner Gabriel after an early mistake, but nearly gifted the Saints a goal himself with a careless pass. Looked uncertain throughout.

CB: Gabriel—6.7: An uncharacteristic lapse handed Scienza a clear opening, and the Brazilian never found his rhythm in a disjointed, makeshift backline. Forced off through injury in the second half—a worrying development for Arsenal supporters.

LB: Myles Lewis-Skelly—6.9: Pushed into midfield during Arsenal's spells in possession, helping create numerical advantages centrally. However, his forward positioning left the visitors vulnerable on the counter.

CM: Martin Ødegaard—7.6: Showed bright signs on his return after six weeks out and was eager to control the tempo from the outset. Faded slightly before being withdrawn at the hour, but still provided a positive creative influence in the middle of the park.

CM: Christian Nørgaard—7.3: Frequently left to patrol the midfield alone, yet performed commendably despite limited support from those around him.

RW: Max Dowman—6.9: Arsenal's standout performer, as his courage and quick feet kept Southampton on edge. Another glimpse of his exceptional ability was one of the few positives to take away.

AM: Kai Havertz—6.6: Operated largely in Southampton's half and eventually made his mark by teeing up Gyökeres after a sharp, incisive run.

LW: Gabriel Martinelli—7.3: Energetic and direct in possession, consistently willing to take on Southampton right back James Bree.

ST: Gabriel Jesus—6.0: Virtually invisible throughout and had little grounds for complaint when he was hauled off at the hour mark.

SUB: Riccardo Calafiori (60' for Lewis-Skelly)—6.0: Found it difficult to contain Tom Fellows after coming on.

SUB: Noni Madueke (60' for Ødegaard)—6.3: Attempted to create something special but lacked the cutting edge to make it count.

SUB: Viktor Gyökeres (60' for Jesus)—7.3: Having made a significant impact for Sweden during the international window, Gyökeres came off the bench to rescue Arsenal with the equaliser.

SUB: William Saliba (72' for Gabriel)—6.1: Unable to bring stability to a surprisingly leaky Arsenal defence.

SUB: Martín Zubimendi (79' for Havertz)—6.1: Made little impression in either direction.

Subs not used: David Raya (GK), Marli Salmon, Andre Harriman-Annous, Ceadach O'Neill.
