Arteta Fires Back at Arsenal Legends Over Scathing Player Criticism

Mikel Arteta acknowledged the requirement for "psychological resilience" following Arsenal's recurring weaknesses being highlighted by club legends Patrick Vieira and Arsène Wenger, who collectively criticized four separate players after Sunday's loss to Manchester United.

Few teams are as prone to dramatic overreaction as this current Arsenal squad. Scarred by three consecutive second-place campaigns and squandered commanding positions, supporters of the Gunners remain perpetually ready to spiral into despair at the slightest hint of adversity.

Arsenal were outplayed by United—as Arteta himself conceded, "we weren't that good." They remain atop the Premier League standings with a four-point advantage, but the nature of the 3–2 loss at the Emirates, where they surrendered complete control after rightfully taking the lead in the opening period, triggered the usual criticism of the team's collective "courage"—or absence of it.

Ex-Arsenal skipper Vieira, regarded as an embodiment of psychological toughness during his three Premier League championship victories as a player, challenged the squad's "psychological resilience" from the Sky Sports commentary position.

"That's acceptable," Arteta curtly responded when confronted with this critique after the match. "I mean, we welcome every viewpoint, regardless of its source, and they have valid grounds to express it. Ultimately, we must demonstrate the psychological resilience we possess on the field when match day arrives," he conceded.

"We performed exceptionally well in Milan and today we fell short. I'm uncertain if it was psychological. However, because we were subpar, particularly in technical execution in specific areas of the game, against an opponent that capitalizes heavily on such errors. That made the crucial difference."

The fact that United's three goals originated from an xG of 0.71, two spectacular long-range efforts and one uncharacteristic error, was ignored by most observers. For the majority, this defeat was undoubtedly psychological.

Vieira was dissatisfied with Arsenal's display at the interval—arguing they hadn't earned their 1–0 advantage—and grew increasingly frustrated by the final whistle.

"It was a deflating display," the World Cup champion lamented. "When you're leading the table, you anticipate victory at home. Particularly against United. They maintain a four-point cushion, but doubts persist regarding the squad's psychological fortitude. I believe there was insufficient intensity. Too many individuals failed to meet expectations.

"This was a crucial fixture. They needed to establish their authority to the remaining teams in the division."

Vieira proceeded to explicitly identify the players he believed underperformed.

"It's not merely that they suffered defeat, it's how they capitulated," he fumed. "[Bukayo] Saka and [Leandro] Trossard failed to generate sufficient threat against United.

"They require a figurehead to elevate the team's morale. They must recognize that when competing, they need to display greater intensity and boldness. They possess the talent. They didn't compete with the confidence to showcase their abilities. They must return to fundamentals. To demonstrate their skills, compete with assurance, and attack. Too many individuals underperformed today.

"I believe Saka was overly subdued. He represents one of, if not, the finest attacking talent. In significant matches like this, you expect him to find the net and inspire the team. Trossard holds importance, but he disappointed. [Gabriel] Jesus covered considerable ground, expended significant effort, but you want him positioned in the penalty area more frequently. In midfield, only Declan Rice delivered. Too many players failed to reach their standard."

'Anxious'—Arsene Wenger Criticizes Two Arsenal Players

William Saliba

Instead of Arsenal's two wide players, Wenger focused his criticism elsewhere. The iconic former coach described the central defensive partnership of William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhães as uncharacteristically "anxious" while explaining why the Gunners succumbed to Manchester United on Sunday afternoon.

"I believe they [Arsenal] were so desperate to secure victory that they lacked composure in their build-up play and ball circulation," the beIN Sports analyst assessed. "They relied excessively on power rather than finesse. Conversely, I believe [Michael] Carrick discovered an effective approach and proper equilibrium between defensive solidity and technical proficiency.

"This marks the first occasion I've observed the central defenders [Saliba and Gabriel] appearing somewhat more anxious and less commanding than their typical performances.

"Regarding the [first] United goal, Martín Zubimendi commits an error, but Saliba shouldn't advance ahead of him; he should provide assistance and remain behind to maintain defensive coverage."
