Arteta Fires Back at Critics Calling Arsenal 'Bottlers' Following Frustrating Wolves Stalemate

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta firmly rejected the "bottlers" label as he stood by his team against their unwelcome reputation.

Following their disappointing 2–2 stalemate with relegation-threatened Wolverhampton Wanderers during the week, the North Londoners head into the weekend holding just a five-point advantage over Manchester City, despite having played an additional match compared to Pep Guardiola's squad.

The outcome rekindled memories of previous letdowns for Arsenal, with statistics revealing their clear decline in form during the final stages of three out of the past four Premier League campaigns, though Arteta maintained it's unjust to brand his team as "bottlers."

"That represents personal perspective, and you must respect that viewpoint," he replied. "You drop two points against Wolves given how the match unfolded, and you must accept it gracefully. That's simply part of it. It comes with our position.

"However, that term isn't in my lexicon and I don't view it that way because I believe nobody intends to do that deliberately. I wouldn't employ that expression."

Arsenal have been comfortably positioned at the Premier League summit for most of the campaign and continue pursuing a historic Quadruple as they target success in the Champions League, FA Cup and Carabao Cup alongside the league title.

Nevertheless, a streak of merely two victories from seven matches has sparked inevitable mockery from opposing fans eager to highlight the Gunners' failure to maintain previous advantages during this crucial phase of the championship battle.

Arteta, who contended that injuries have again contributed to Arsenal's difficulties, emphasized that his team's reaction to adversity matters more than the initial downturn.

"When we haven't met our expectations, I accept complete accountability for that," he declared. "I don't believe I have ever singled out an individual player or the entire squad.

"I can discuss expectations, certainly, and in the second period [against Wolves] we didn't reach our expectations, which is understandable given the volume of matches we're playing, but if anyone bears responsibility, it's me.

"We have very precise guidance. We must focus on the present moment, and the present is wonderful.

"We are precisely where we aim to be across all competitions. Therefore, staying composed, keeping my vision clear, my attention focused, and recognizing what the players require to perform at their peak.

"What I've witnessed [from the group] is an incredible response. And I'm not shocked whatsoever.

"What truly interests me is the upcoming chapter, what we're composed of and how we shape our own future moving forward."
