Arteta Issues Fierce Challenge to Arsenal Stars After Making Audacious Leverkusen Declaration

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has cautioned his squad that they "must" replicate the flawless performance they achieved during the Champions League league phase when they face Bayer Leverkusen in the round of 16.

The North London side secured victories in all eight of their initial stage fixtures without falling behind once, netting 23 goals while allowing only eight. When suggested to Arteta that these achievements, combined with their position atop the Premier League table, should establish them among Europe's elite clubs, he responded positively.

"I think so," Arteta confirmed, before quickly noting, "But this is football and you must demonstrate it tomorrow evening."

Arteta took charge of a club that hadn't featured in the Champions League since 2017. Arsenal advanced to the quarterfinals during their comeback season (2023–24) before progressing to the semifinals last campaign. The upcoming goal is evident.

"When I arrived, a significant portion of the squad had never competed in this tournament," the Spanish tactician observed. "That experience is clearly essential, as with any other competition. They comprehend it more thoroughly now. We must deliver results."

Despite that European thrashing, Leverkusen possess the Bundesliga's third-strongest defensive record and have claimed several impressive victories that Hjulmand was eager to highlight.

"We've already demonstrated this campaign against numerous top sides like Manchester City, Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig that we can overcome them," the Danish manager emphasized. "As everyone understands, football holds endless possibilities.

"You simply must have faith in it. This self-belief is critically important. That's why we're approaching this fixture with optimism and we'll commit everything at home to secure a positive outcome for the return leg."

While Hjulmand offered generous praise for Arteta, Leverkusen's social media team found room for a gentle dig.

The club's official English X account referenced Arteta's notorious lightbulb motivational speech that was documented in Amazon Prime's All or Nothing series. "[Thomas] Edison created the light bulb," the Arsenal manager passionately declared to his players during the 2021–22 season, holding a single illuminated bulb in his hand.

"Tonight I want to witness a squad that is unified because a bulb alone means nothing. I want to see a team that connects with one another and radiates brilliance. And you want to share with him [your teammate] illumination and vigor and enthusiasm and your football style, and you two likewise. And each of us participates in the match united, because what occurs when we compete as one, gentlemen?

"What follows next? We unite with 60,000 supporters [the fans] who generate additional energy. Because ultimately it's electricity, that through warmth produces illumination and vitality. Because otherwise it would be completely dark if this person doesn't conceive that idea.

"And I want you to compete like this tonight, because regardless of our quality it relies on one factor. What distinguishes us is our mentality, and tonight I want you to perform with that mindset. Go forth, switch on the lights, and play football. Let's proceed!"

Arsenal suffered a 2–1 defeat to Brighton.

Leverkusen's social media team joined the wave of mockery this footage has attracted over the past four years by recording themselves racing through the locker room covering light switches with tape and removing an electrical cord.

It was an innocent post but one that might have grabbed Arteta's notice. In the identical documentary, one of the manager's pregame speeches against Brentford focused on a social media post from former Bees forward Ivan Toney following a victory over Arsenal. Perhaps this Leverkusen content will feature in Wednesday's match preparation.
