Arteta Pulls No Punches, Blasts Arsenal's Dismal Display With Zero Tolerance

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta conceded his team had "no excuses" for their underwhelming display in Saturday's stunning 2–1 loss to Bournemouth—a result the Spaniard described as a "big punch in the face" for everyone involved.

The table-topping Gunners had the opportunity to extend their lead over Manchester City to 12 points ahead of City's trip to Chelsea on Sunday, but were instead rightfully undone by Andoni Iraola's Cherries.

A sluggish Arsenal opening was exploited by Eli Junior Kroupi's goal, and while Viktor Gyökeres levelled for the hosts from the penalty spot, there was no real resurgence from Arteta's side, who appeared to be settling for a draw before lifelong Spurs fan Alex Scott struck with 15 minutes to go.

Scott's well-crafted winner means City can cut the gap to six points with a victory at Stamford Bridge, while carrying all the momentum into next week's potentially pivotal showdown between the two title contenders at the Etihad Stadium.

Disappointment Evident As Arteta Faces the Music

"Well, extremely disappointing," Arteta told reporters following Saturday's defeat. "It's a big punch on the face. That's what I said to the boys. And now it's about how we react to that. Because game on, you're going to require now a big speed, a lot of fight and very clear. How are we going to approach that?"

Arsenal have largely managed to ensure that individual setbacks haven't spiralled into prolonged slumps. However, they've now lost three of their last four matches across all competitions, having struggled to replicate the outstanding form they showed in the first half of the season throughout 2026.

What were once bold dreams of a quadruple are now giving way to renewed anxiety among supporters.

"There's no grey areas. We are in, we are out. And we need to be very, very, very strong and determined to approach it in a different way than we've done today, especially when the game wasn't going our way," Arteta added.

The Arsenal manager, who had spoken to many fans ahead of the fixture, apologised to those who attended and bemoaned the sloppiness of his team's performance. "We were very far from the level that I was shown. That's for certain, especially in certain areas that are critical," he said.

Bournemouth excel at creating disorder, and the possession-focused Gunners were never able to handle the Cherries' energy and pressing game effectively.

"There are no excuses. There is no this or that or the things that are here. It's about how we're going to stand up, first of all, individually. And then as a team to change that immediately on Wednesday."

The Emirates Stadium should provide a more comfortable setting when Sporting CP arrive for the second leg of their Champions League quarterfinal, with Arsenal holding a 1–0 advantage courtesy of Kai Havertz's stoppage-time strike in Lisbon.

Arteta will be hoping to secure smooth passage into the semifinals before his side heads north to face their formidable title rivals.
