Arteta Urges Patience as Gyokeres Struggles to Find the Net: "Take Another Step Forward"

Mikel Arteta has shown optimism that Viktor Gyökeres will reach "100% or beyond" when Arsenal kick off their Premier League campaign against Manchester United on August 17.

Gyökeres has featured for 77 minutes during pre-season losses to Tottenham Hotspur and Villarreal, yet to score his first goal for his new team.

The Swedish striker, with a price tag reaching £63.5 million ($84.9 million) when straightforward bonuses are activated, carries significant pressure following his 97-goal tally for Sporting CP over the past two campaigns.

Gyökeres managed just 14 ball touches and one shot on target as Arsenal collectively found it difficult against Villarreal's counter-attacking approach. When questioned by journalists afterward about whether the ex-Coventry City striker would be prepared for the Old Trafford encounter this month, Arteta responded positively.

"100%," the coach answered. "I believe mentally, and grasping what's required of him, he'll reach 100% or beyond. His eagerness and self-assurance that he can perform immediately leaves me without any concerns that he'll be in excellent form."

Arteta noted that Gyökeres getting his first start against Villarreal, after only coming on late as a substitute versus Spurs, represented a significant advancement in his development.

"He's only been training with us for about a week, but I've already noticed many positive aspects and clear intent, particularly how he was moving into specific areas," Arteta commented. "Overall, for many players who haven't had extensive playing time, we now have several who will be prepared for Saturday [against Athletic Club] in much improved form."

One element affecting Gyökeres' need for adjustment time stems from the actions he took to facilitate his Arsenal transfer. The striker declined to participate in Sporting's training sessions to force the club's hand while pursuing his desired move.

"Each training day I believe he's developing a strong understanding," Arteta added.

"He's forming relationships with teammates, which is crucial for players who need to reach the positions where they can be most effective. Regarding his physical condition, he hasn't trained with a squad for two months. I believe he's completed five sessions before [Wednesday]. I expect on Saturday he'll make further progress and be in superior shape."
