Barcelona chose not to sign a new center back during the summer transfer window, but the Catalan club is reportedly still scouting the market for a central defender, with 19-year-old Brazilian Arthur Dias emerging as a primary target.
According to SPORT, Barcelona's interest in the young Brazilian goes beyond mere observation; their pursuit of the teenager is genuine. He fits precisely the center back profile the club has been seeking.
Dias currently plays for Athletico Paranaense in Brazil's top division, with his market value estimated at approximately €12 million ($13.4 million) — a figure that will only rise as he continues to impress.
Several other major European clubs are also tracking Dias's development as he cements his reputation as one of the most highly regarded young center backs in the game. Nevertheless, Barcelona consider him an ideal long-term addition capable of competing with Gerard Martín to partner Pau Cubarsí at the heart of their defense.
But what makes Barcelona so captivated by the young Brazilian?
Who Is Barcelona Target Arthur Dias?

Dias joined Paranaense's youth academy at the age of 15 in 2022. He initially struggled as a center forward, but his physical attributes caught the attention of the club's technical staff, who recognized his potential to develop into a formidable defender.
He made his senior debut on July 27, 2025, going on to appear in 18 matches for the remainder of that season and contributing to the club's promotion to the Brazilian Serie A. During the same period, he was part of the Brazil squad that claimed the CONMEBOL U–20 Championship in 2025.
Dias's real breakthrough, however, came in 2026. The young defender has started 28 of Paranaense's 30 league fixtures this season, with the newly-promoted club currently sitting third in the table and pushing for Copa Libertadores qualification with eight matches remaining.
His outstanding campaign earned him a call-up just weeks ago, when Carlo Ancelotti included him in Brazil's squad for the September-October international break. The teenager made his senior Seleção debut in a friendly against Australia before starting alongside Marquinhos in a commanding 4–0 victory over India.
Standing at 6'5", Dias is a commanding physical presence who is also comfortable in possession and effective during build-up play. Crucially for Barcelona, he is left-footed — a profile that Hansi Flick specifically requires — and world-class center backs of that kind are rare in world football, with those who do exist commanding hefty price tags.
Dias Is Exactly the Type of Center Back Barcelona Are after

Barcelona's interest in Dias is so concrete that the club's head of scouting, João Amaral, publicly mentioned the Brazilian youngster by name when describing the type of center back the club is targeting.
"We are working on identifying profiles that have these characteristics, like the ones Arthur Dias has," Amaral said on The Pitch Invaders podcast. "A fast player with a great relationship with the ball. That's the profile of center back we're looking for to reinforce the club."
Amaral also revealed he has an excellent working relationship with Dias, while highlighting a key aspect of Flick's approach to player assessment. "Flick doesn't look at a player's age; he looks at their skills and qualities."
The attention from top European clubs has now become impossible for Dias to overlook, and the player recently addressed the speculation linking him to some of the world's elite teams.
"Every player dreams of one day playing in the Champions League," Dias said, via Sport. "Of competing in a truly prestigious competition. That said, right now I'm fully focused and committed to Athletico. These matters I leave to my agent."
Dias added: "I'm very pleased that clubs are showing interest in me. It means I'm performing well on the pitch, but I always say I wouldn't be where I am without my teammates and coaches. Of course my ambition is to win trophies and keep growing, but I'm very happy here."
Barcelona have not addressed the center back position since the beginning of the Flick era, but that could change in the coming transfer windows now that the club has openly declared their interest in Dias.
