Atletico Madrid Clash With Man Utd: Everything You Need to Know Before Kickoff

Manchester United's Champions League league phase campaign resumes with a challenging away fixture against Atlético Madrid.

Michael Carrick guided the Red Devils back into Europe's top club competition following his appointment as interim manager in January, but the now-permanent boss has struggled with the additional demands at the outset of the 2026–27 season.

United were held by the 10 men of Tottenham Hotspur over the weekend, stretching their winless streak in domestic competitions to four games. Carrick's squad are currently hampered by clear problems when out of possession, and while running statistics don't tell the whole story, United are unlikely to pick up many results performing with the low intensity they've shown in recent matches.

A change of scenery could do the struggling Red Devils some good, even if few sides relish a visit to the Metropolitano.

Atlético head into this fixture on the back of four consecutive victories, and one of their standout summer signings, Cristian Romero, proved to be the decisive figure at the weekend. Romero's 88th-minute strike sent Atléti past Alavés on Saturday, keeping Diego Simeone's men above city rivals Real Madrid in the La Liga standings.

Red Devils Defeated in Atléti's Cauldron

Michael Carrick

Man Utd at least got their Champions League campaign off the ground on their first outing, cruising past newcomers Sabah 4–0. Atlético Madrid, by contrast, suffered a 2–1 defeat at Anfield.

While United have looked remarkably easy to play against on both sides of the international break, this competition may actually suit Carrick's team. On Tuesday, there will be less pressure on Carrick's side to dominate proceedings, and they'll be content to operate on the counter, even without Benjamin Šeško.

Ultimately, United have tended to be most effective over the last decade when playing a transitional style. As such, the opening goal feels pivotal in the Spanish capital, given Atléti's own threat on the break.

Simeone's side can be unpredictable these days, but the Argentine will be hoping that the summer addition of Romero and the continued growth of Marc Pubill will help solidify a defense that was vulnerable last season.

Simeone is expected to have a full squad at his disposal for Man Utd's visit. The Argentine must therefore determine the right tactical setup.

They have alternated between a back three and four at the start of the new campaign, with a 4-2-3-1 used against Alavés at the weekend. That formation could be maintained here, with Álex Baena slotting in behind Alvarez in the No. 10 role.

Simeone has Alexander Sørloth available as a backup option, along with Jonathan David, should Alvarez's slow start to the season persist. Kang-in Lee and Ademola Lookman provide dynamic width, while Koke continues to perform strongly in midfield alongside the impressive Pablo Barrios.

Romero was dismissed in his previous meeting with the Red Devils earlier this year, and he'll spearhead Atléti's strengthened backline on Tuesday.

Atlético Madrid predicted lineup vs. Man Utd (4-2-3-1): Oblak; Llorente, Romero, Pubill, Hancko; Koke, Barrios; Lee, Baena, Lookman; Alvarez.

Man Utd have been hit with a couple of new injury concerns ahead of Tuesday's league phase encounter.

Luke Shaw and Kobbie Mainoo were absent from team training on Monday, casting serious doubt over their availability for the match. At this stage, it appears unlikely that either will play, given the short turnaround and their respective fitness records. Mainoo notably withdrew from Thomas Tuchel's England squad due to a fitness issue.

Carrick will need to reorganize his defensive unit due to limited options at left back in Shaw's absence. Diogo Dalot could shift to the opposite side, allowing Leny Yoro to retain his spot at right back.

Carlos Baleba looks set for his first Man Utd start after catching the eye as a substitute against Spurs on his debut. Youri Tielemans may line up alongside his fellow new signing, despite a difficult weekend performance.

The visitors also remain without Patrick Dorgu, Benjamin Šeško, and Noussair Mazraoui.

Man Utd predicted lineup vs. Atlético Madrid (4-2-3-1): Lammens; Yoro, Maguire, Martínez, Dalot; Tielemans, Baleba; Mbeumo, Fernandes, Rashford; Cunha.
