Just 48 hours before the 2026 World Cup final, Atlético Madrid CEO Miguel Ángel Gil Marín made a bold public declaration that the club has no intention of selling prized striker Julián Alvarez—not even for a staggering $229 million (€200 million) bid.
With speculation surrounding his future at a fever pitch, Alvarez has remained locked in on claiming back-to-back World Cup glory with Argentina. That hasn't stopped Atlético Madrid from stoking the flames of his already blazing transfer saga, however, as the club released a video in which Gil Marín categorically ruled out any move for Alvarez to Barcelona—or anywhere else this summer.
"My stance is clear," Gil Marín said. "The club's intentions are clear; we have communicated this to the player, the supporters, and Barcelona's president. I have no doubt that Atlético is the best place in the world for Julián, and that Julián is the ideal center forward for Atlético Madrid. We want him to remain with us.
"I recently heard the [Barcelona] president suggest that the offer he submitted to Atlético Madrid wasn't open-ended, and the only response I can give is that our answer certainly is. We have no desire to sell him—we rejected the €100 million offer, and we would equally reject one of €150 million or €200 million."
Gil Marín acknowledged his cordial relationship with Barcelona president Joan Laporta, revealing he recently spoke with him directly and said, "Please, just let this go. We do not want to sell him, and we are not going to sell him. Stop pushing."
Barcelona Set Julián Alvarez Transfer Deadline
As Gil Marín referenced, Laporta had come forward days earlier to confirm that Barcelona's opening bid for Alvarez remains on the table—but only for a limited window. Following Gil Marín's forceful remarks, Laporta once again stood firm on his position.
"I respect everyone's perspective," Laporta said. "I respect Miguel Angel's view, Enrique's [Atletico president's], everyone's. We have an offer on the table—he's a player our coach wants, which is why we approached Atlético Madrid.
"It's a very significant offer for us, and a strong one. Yes, it's not open-ended, and we will allow a reasonable amount of time once the World Cup concludes. I'd say until the end of the month."
Laporta maintained that Alvarez moving to Barcelona this summer cannot be entirely dismissed, but time is running out. Barça will wait until the end of July to determine whether Atlético is prepared to enter negotiations. However, club officials are already bracing for disappointment, believing that unless Alvarez publicly pressures Atlético, the dream move may remain just that, per MARCA.
Alvarez had already issued a public transfer request earlier during the World Cup, yet that only appeared to push Atlético into an even more rigid position. Nevertheless, reports suggest a second public statement from Alvarez expressing his wish to leave the Spanish capital is not out of the question.
Julian Alvarez Relationship With Atléti is 'Irreconcilable'—Report
According to ESPN's Leo Paradizo, Alvarez is furious over the recent comments—particularly their timing, which once again thrust his transfer saga into the spotlight on the eve of one of the most important matches of his career. The rift between player and club may have reached a point of no return, per the report.
"I've spoken with people very close to Julián," Paradizo said. "There's a widespread anger over a situation that has become irreconcilable at this point, because they believe [Gil Marín's comments and their timing] were deliberately harmful."
"The relationship is in a worse state than before," Paradizo added. "So there's a huge question mark over what happens next."
Multiple reports indicate Alvarez is also frustrated because he was led to believe Atléti would allow him to leave if a substantial offer materialized—an offer like the one Barcelona submitted. The next development could see Alvarez refusing to show up for Atléti's preseason, which would add yet another dramatic chapter to the ongoing saga.

Whether that would be enough to soften Atléti's hardline stance and grant Alvarez his desired exit remains unclear. But even if it did, Arsenal appears to be the more probable destination, given Los Rojiblancos' fierce resistance to Barcelona's pursuit.
Alvarez will bid to claim his second World Cup title on Sunday night. Come Monday, however, he'll be back at the center of the summer's most closely watched transfer saga as it appears to be reaching its decisive moment.
