Ballon d'Or 2026: Lamine Yamal Dominates the Kopa Trophy Race—Who Dares to Challenge Him?

Ballon d'Or 2026: Lamine Yamal Dominates the Kopa Trophy Race—Who Dares to Challenge Him?

The competition for the 2026 Kopa Trophy has officially begun.

Tuesday saw the announcement of the 10 players shortlisted for the honor, which recognizes the finest player in the world aged under 21. As expected, two-time champion and reigning holder Lamine Yamal sits at the top of the list.

Yamal occupies a unique position of still being eligible for an award designed to spotlight rising talent while simultaneously ranking among the finest players in the world regardless of age. His status as the frontrunner to claim a historic third consecutive Ballon d'Or category win comes as little surprise.

That said, a host of elite young talents will be eager to dethrone Barcelona's prodigy and claim the prize for themselves.

Ranking the Favorites to Win the 2026 Kopa Trophy

10. Kerim Alajbegovic

Kerim Alajbegović

The 2025–26 campaign proved to be a breakthrough season for Kerim Alajbegović, whose impressive performances with RB Salzburg attracted interest from Chelsea and ultimately led to a lucrative $34.6 million (€30 million) transfer to Juventus over the summer.

A lack of widespread recognition will work against Alajbegović in this race. The young winger contributed 13 goals and four assists across all competitions for the Austrian club last season — respectable figures, certainly, but not quite on par with the achievements of others on this list.

At just 18 years old, Alajbegović still has time to claim this honor, and a standout campaign with Juve could significantly boost his prospects for 2027.

9. Ibrahim Maza

Ibrahim Maza

The step up to the Bundesliga with Bayer Leverkusen proved no obstacle for Ibrahim Maza. An outstanding debut season in top-level football cemented his reputation as one of the brightest young talents on the planet, and deservedly so.

Maza wasted little time in forcing his way into Bayer's first-team plans, with his exceptional dribbling ability and composure under pressure quickly drawing admiring glances from clubs worldwide. Five goals and seven assists hint at the enormous potential he possesses.

The 20-year-old is not yet ready to claim this award and still has another level to reach before being considered a truly elite talent, but Maza is clearly heading in the right direction.

8. Warren Zaïre-Emery

Warren Zaïre-Emery

Warren Zaïre-Emery may be suffering from how his role is perceived by the wider public. When discussing Paris Saint-Germain's strongest midfield options, the 20-year-old's name rarely surfaces alongside Vitinha, João Neves, and Fabián Ruiz.

This creates the impression that Zaïre-Emery, now four full senior seasons into his career, may not be performing at his peak — yet the statistics tell a very different story. In fact, no other PSG player logged more minutes than his 4,224 across all competitions, with Zaïre-Emery one of only three players to surpass the 3,000-minute mark.

He started 15 Champions League matches, only coming off the bench in the opening and closing games of the competition, but Zaïre-Emery simply lacks the buzz required to win this award. He will likely finish well below where his performances truly merit.

7. Johan Manzambi

Johan Manzambi

While Zaïre-Emery may require a lift in public profile, Johan Manzambi has no such problem.

Seven goals and nine assists for the dynamic midfielder at Stuttgart earned him a place in Switzerland's 2026 World Cup squad. Manzambi emerged as one of the tournament's standout breakout performers, registering five goal contributions across four appearances. A move to Aston Villa for close to $80 million quickly followed.

Manzambi, 20, brims with raw potential as a powerful, ball-carrying forward and has now been handed the ideal stage to continue his development.

6. Éli Junior Kroupi

Éli Junior Kroupi

Thirteen Premier League goals and speculation linking Europe's biggest clubs to nine-figure bids will both strengthen Éli Junior Kroupi's candidacy for this award.

The France U-21 international just completed one of the most impressive breakout seasons the Premier League has witnessed from a player of his age, and there is widespread belief that Kroupi has even greater things ahead once he recovers from foot surgery sustained while at Bournemouth.

A superb year for Kroupi, but one that, when measured against the campaigns of those around him in this race, may ultimately fall short.

5. Lennart Karl

Lennart Karl

Bayern Munich possess one of the most formidable attacking units on the planet, if not the most formidable. Breaking into that setup is a daunting challenge, yet it is one 18-year-old Lennart Karl has taken on with relish.

Racking up 39 appearances across all competitions — including eight in the Champions League and 24 starts in total — is a remarkable achievement for the versatile attacking midfielder, who rounded off the season with nine goals and eight assists.

It was a near-flawless breakthrough campaign for Karl, who will look to use the 2026–27 season to cement his place among the game's elite.

4. Ayyoub Bouaddi

Ayyoub Bouaddi

There is a noticeable step up in quality when reaching the top four of this race, with Ayyoub Bouaddi carrying himself more like an established star than a rising prospect.

Bouaddi departed Lille this summer having made 96 appearances for the club — a remarkable tally for an 18-year-old — and, following a standout World Cup with Morocco, completed a staggering $117 million move to Manchester City.

His young age means Bouaddi will have plenty more chances to claim this award, and he could be impossible to overlook if he comes close to filling Rodri's shoes at the Etihad Stadium.

3. Yan Diomande

Yan Diomande

With just 46 senior appearances to his name heading into last season's conclusion, Yan Diomande's ascent has been nothing short of meteoric. Thirteen goals and 10 assists for RB Leipzig paved the way for a transfer to Real Madrid in a deal potentially worth up to $160 million including add-ons — extraordinary for a player who only made his senior debut in March 2025.

Diomande took the footballing world by storm, excelling in a major league like the Bundesliga before shining at the World Cup with Côte d'Ivoire to establish himself as one of the planet's premier young talents. His electrifying dribbling has left many salivating over what lies ahead for Diomande.

This was a breathtaking year from Diomande, one that could easily have delivered Kopa Trophy glory in a less competitive field.

2. Pau Cubarsí

Pau Cubarsí

A regular starter for the club that lifted La Liga and the national side that won the World Cup, Pau Cubarsí embodies everything this award stands for. He may be just 19 years old, but the center-back is unquestionably among the world's finest defenders.

Little more needs to be said about Cubarsí, whose 3,977 minutes for Barcelona last season were surpassed only by goalkeeper Joan García. He played every single minute for Spain on their triumphant World Cup run and is without doubt one of the best players in the world in his position.

Even that remarkable body of work, however, may not be enough.

1. Lamine Yamal

Lamine Yamal

Just imagine the kind of season you would need to deliver to lay claim to the title of the world's best U-21 player in 2026.

Lamine Yamal just produced 24 goals and 18 assists for Barcelona, having spent the past two years firmly established as one of the finest players on the planet. Even a subdued World Cup, disrupted by injury, is unlikely to dent his case for this award.

No player other than Yamal has ever won the Kopa Trophy twice, and he is on the verge of claiming it a third time. Given that he won't turn 21 until July 2028, don't rule out him adding a few more before he's done.
