Barcelona Benches Rising Star Lamine Yamal Against Sevilla - Here's Why

Barcelona coach Hansi Flick has followed through on his rotation strategy for Sunday's La Liga encounter against Sevilla, notably benching Lamine Yamal while handing Xavi Espart his first-team league debut.

Yamal has been relegated to substitute duty in just one league fixture this campaign. Following painkiller injections to feature in both Spain internationals in September, Yamal was sidelined for four consecutive club games and was deemed ready for only a 30-minute appearance against Real Sociedad late in the month. Yamal subsequently set up Robert Lewandowski's decisive strike.

This persistent groin issue has remained a lingering concern throughout Yamal's season, making his recent exceptional performances even more remarkable. Nevertheless, it remains a factor for Flick during congested fixture scheduling, especially considering the mounting injury list within Barcelona's squad.

"Restricted choices," was the coach's brief assessment of his available options following Tuesday's hard-fought 1–1 stalemate with Newcastle United. Yamal salvaged a draw for the Catalan side heading into Wednesday's return leg at Camp Nou with a last-gasp penalty and must perform at peak level if Barcelona hope to break down the Magpies' resolute defense and progress to the Champions League quarterfinals.

Fermín López was also given a break this weekend, moving to the substitutes' bench as Dani Olmo took over the No. 10 role. Roony Bardghji occupied Yamal's right-wing position while Espart received his La Liga bow at right-back.

The La Masia academy product made his senior bow in the final moments against Newcastle during the week and was entrusted to step in for Ronald Araújo in Sunday's starting lineup.

When Barcelona met Newcastle in the Champions League during September, it was Marcus Rashford instead of Yamal who commanded attention. With the youngster managing his troublesome groin problem, Flick moved Raphinha to the right wing to accommodate Rashford on the left.

The Manchester United loan signing justified that confidence with an outstanding performance at St James' Park, netting both goals in a 2–1 victory. "I believe he's an exceptional talent," Flick praised afterward. "His abilities are incredible and his goal-scoring prowess is incredible."

It was the German manager who advocated for his signing during the summer. "When we discussed our team requirements before the season, we recognized we needed someone like him," Flick disclosed. "When this opportunity [to acquire him] arose, I insisted we must pursue it. He's a remarkable player."

However, that honeymoon period has cooled in recent weeks. It's become crystal clear that when the squad is healthy, Rashford isn't guaranteed a starting role. Being positioned behind Raphinha in the club's hierarchy isn't necessarily disappointing—the Brazilian was justifiably disappointed with merely placing fifth in last year's Ballon d'Or.

Nevertheless, Rashford now seems to be competing for starting opportunities with 20-year-old Swedish international Roony Bardghji.

Similar to the Sevilla match, Flick opted for the promising left-footed player to directly substitute Yamal in the Copa del Rey semifinals versus Athletic Club, keeping Raphinha in his preferred left-wing role and leaving Rashford among the substitutes. Roony validated his inclusion with one goal and two assists.

Flick's choice to bypass Rashford follows Barcelona's presidential candidate Joan Laporta questioning the club's commitment to making his loan arrangement permanent.
